video card going bad?
« on: September 02, 2004, 09:11:46 AM »
For a few eeks now my ATI 9700 AIW  been acting wierd.

for time to time while playing AH2 it will freaks out and i get garbled vertical lines all blurry and even if i exit the screens still that way till i reboot!  Its even happend when i was just watching TV on the thing with nothing else in the back groud.

Like i said i have to rebbot to get the video back to normal.

I wen throught the ATI removal proggy and deleted all ATI file accept the 4.8 driver version/control panel  (kept on a separate HD)  wiped out all file in PROGRAM files totally cleaned it out and reistalled the 4.8's  but im still having the random problem! It mostly happens when i get into AH but is not limited to just AH.

So how do you know when the video cards goingbad?

Either your video card is going bad, or the AGP slot needs
to be cleaned out.  If it looks dirty, just pick up a can of
compressed air (from Staples etc.) and blow the slot out.

This can also happen if you either didn't seat the card in
properly, or you happen to have put the video card in without
securing it down with the screw-  this will cause you to bend
the pins in the AGP slot.
If all it needs is a cleaning, it wouldn't hurt to clean it all
out with that compressed air as long as you have it apart.

It also could be heat or power related.  When playing Aces High II, the video card is going to consume a lot more power and run hotter.
Do not panic about this.  Any 3D graphics program is going to exercise hardware on the video card that is idle when you are at the Windows desktop or running a 2D application.

Make sure the card is not crammed with dust, as it runs hot anyways.

well boys thanks for the info i think thats what it might be! I blew the case out (of dust) abut 3 weeks ago and it so happens to be around the time when this started ..... so thats probably it

as far as heat got Skuzzimister  my case has to temp sensors for the CPU and HD well i hooked the HD sensor up to the GPU!(on the bottem side of the HS next to the GPU it self)

well the GPU NEVER gets above 45 degrees C. ive thought about the heat issue and if the dusting doesnt work ill remove the HS  re artic silver it and and re-seat it.

EDIT oh ya i need to buy a new can of AIR !(why does that always sound so dumb)

I'd be worried about power supply beginning to go bad (as Skuzzy said above). Thats usually one of the 1st signs (spike in video voltage)...I'd take a sec and pull the power supply plug to MB...lot of times you'll see a bit of "burn" if the PS is begining to go.

Boxboy

Had some red vertical lines on my AIW 9700 a few months back.
Did a bit of searching with google and on Rage3d forums. Seems some of the AIW 9700s have memory problems.

My card eventually died and I rma'ed it. I was really surprised at ATIs turn around time it was only  2 weeks (I shipped it ground). I believe that card has a five year warranty? Hope thats good news for you.

Sorry I didnt mean to imply that there was any offical acknowledgement from ATI.  I came to that conclussion myself from reading the many post on rage3d forums.    Just search for AIW 9700 Artifacts or red vertical lines. you will see what I mean.

Sandog TY for the links and info I filled out the warrenty service RMA form and am patiantly awaiting for a reply!

but i did notice using Asus probe my +12v rail seems to be running at 12.544 ish pretty stable no spikes.   could that fry the card or cause a problem?

+5 rail is steady @ 4.73 ish
+3.3 rail is at 3.28 ish steady too

My ATI9800 went south from heat.

Replaced with an RMA took about 2 weeks.

Now I got "Arctic Cooling" video card cooler hooked up to it.  Takes up an additional slot though.  Remove old heatsink and fan, install new heat sink and fan and mount exhaust port with hi/low speed switch in the slot next to vid card.  Used Arctic Silver #5 on it.

Blows allot of heat right out the back of the computer case.

CPU now runs cooler then before.

Dang thing runs pretty hot :(

Asus monitor says

CPU temp at  45C

MB temp is at  33C

CPU fan 2789 average

12V is at 12.352

5V is at  4.838

3.3 is at 3.12

VCore is at 1.664

12.5 is normal for most power supplys

as for the asus probe im not shure how far to trust it .. i always do a few bios checks just to compare . and use a temp probe for testing heavy overclocks

4.73 is pretty low for the +5 rail.
