Bombing ships...

I've just learned that even a miss can easily damage a ship.  I was just watching Victory at Sea and a Stuka dropped 2 bombs that were misses, but stopped the american ship.

yeah near misses by eggs are perhaps even better against many ships than direct hits.  When Billy Mitchell's fliers sank the Ostfriesland, the near misses were given credit.

"Near miss" and "Near hit"

Are two of the most annoying phrases.

George Carlin had it right with his bit that went something like this.

If you nearly miss hitting something then you hit it.
If you nearly hit something then you missed it.

On seeing two planes collide in mid air "Look Bob, they nearly missed"

Near misses are modeled as slash damage is modeled.

Well, the point being that a bomb dropped 50ft to the left of the carrier is still going to damage it pretty bad.

blast damage is modeled for CV's

try offline, set the ack to 0 so it does not kill you, and get to an enemy CV with a torpedo.

release the torpedo so it hits right below the big guns on the cruiser.

with 1 torpedo you will not sink the ship, but if aimed right you will get "kill" messages of the guns being damaged by the blast.

this also works with a 1000lb bomb dropped right next to a CV. i mean right next to it though, not glancing it or hitting the edge.

it is easier to see the "kill" message of the gun batteries on the smaller support ships, since their guns are closer to sea level.
I don't know what to put here yet.

I sure underwater explosion (no matter how close) can not damage armored guns on deck (in RL). It can slightly damage hull, open guns may be, but no more.

It all depends on how far from the ship the bomb explodes. And how deep it is when it does explode.

If the ship's side is closer than the surface you could in theory get most of the blast ended up being directed at the side of the ship. Like a shaped charge.

In which chase, buckled hull plates, severed electrical conduits, broken steam lines,   are  just a few of the possibilitys.

RL has no bearing, try it in game.

in RL a Near miss would have done more damage than a hit.

I've always looked forward to skip bombing in AH, both against ships and ground targets.

Alas, its never been modeled.
