The 412th was tasked to defend P95 P107 area flying P-51D's. We had a low turn out and fielded only 5 pilots. We lost 1 to multiple discos and only had 4 Mustangs aloft in active CAP duty.
We flew just S of P95 and P107 flying mainly a E-W patrol. An early call of 109's in the 9.9 sector had us vectoring E to intercept in case they were headed into P95. As we got to the SE quadrant of P95 bases started flashing back out W alerting to an attack.
We turned back west and raced to intercept the contacts. Just south of P95 we ran into a large group of Me-110's pressing northward in an attack on the port. A serious battle ensued as the 412th engaged them. Most of the 110's were wiped out but not after they bombed and heavily damaged the port leaving it in flames.
We vectored NW for P107 after dispatching the attackers at P95 chasing base warnings at 107. About 1/2 way there P95 once again came under attack by yet another force of 110's. Again we intercepted the 110's and after a brief but intense fight they were all dispatched between the 412th and the Shillelaghs I believe.
We rearmed and re-upped for continued CAP. Toward 30 minutes left in the frame we were given permission by Allied CO to go S hunting for targets. That's when the call came in that the 332nd's bombers were being chased down by a large force of 109's and 190's. Most available allied squads were vectored to the fight and a large-scale air battle ensued.
Results for the 412th were 18 kills among 4 pilots with 1 KIA in a crash and all others returning to base safely.
