I don't think the type is smaller. No way anyone in the Air Force would change the ball to do superscript for a memo. If the authenticity of the documents hinge on that there is no doubt they are fake.

Took another look, defintely smaller. Looks bogus to me.

Lets see:

Experts are doubting it.

The Commanfer's family is doubting it.

Common sense doubts it.

The Washington Post ran a investigation that doubts it...

60 minutes is  not releasaing the source..

CBS is starting an investigation..

Hmmm..

PRM you think maybe Kerry's people shopuld spend some more time coming up with real issues instead of faking militarey docuents?

Did you ever think he may have already had that typeball on because he used that feature a lot? He did'nt have to change the ball just to get a superscript when typing a document. Have any of you guys ever used one of those typewriters? All you had to do was hit a key for superscript characters. It was'nt rocket science to type a professional looking military document in the 1970's.

Not what I read RPM. The function of superscript in the Selectric II (the Selectric had no such capability) was nothing more than shifting the head up a bit.

I have, RPM, and unless you had a special ball designed specifically to have that "th" on it you would have to change to get a different size type.  Now if you were doing a footnote, and just needed a number, that small type was on most balls.

What key would you press to type the smaller "th"?

Hmmm, seems there was mention of the Selectric II having the capability of two font sizes on the same ball.

I'm not sure, but I'm not sure what key would you press to get pi, either. But, the typewriter WAS capable of it.

Looking at the document in question, I can't say if it is a fake or not, and I am a typographer.

And today we have computers that can do just about anything. We are talking about 1972 though.

I used both the Selectric and Selectric II in the AF from the '70's up but can't remember what their capabilites were then.

Aren't politics fascinating?

Who could have possibly figured that the 2004 US presidential election would spur a ruckus over what typeballs might have been in use on a vintage '72 IBM typwriter?

Simply amazing.

Not surprising at all considering the man that Bush is running against..  Kerry has nothing else to run on except his vietnam record.

BTW does anyone know if Edwards was out of his diapers back then? Just curious...
