I must be overlooking something as to why that is needed.
The only thing the fighter/attack buttons change is wether yuur score for that sortie is added to the fighter or attck sections of the score sheet. As there are no damage/* sections in the Fighter score sheet that means that any ground object damage will not could towards fighter score or rank.
However perk points are scored for both ground targets and air to air equally reguardless of which scoring option you choose.
BTW I keep forgetting to press that little button too, I'd lile it to be 'sticky' for a given plane, ie. stay as set until I change it. Mainly because I only fly the Typhoon and the F4U-1D as ground attack planes (although the odd plane seems to get in front of my guns by accident every now and then
