Transfer Rate *(non-ah; windoze)
« on: September 08, 2004, 05:25:49 PM »
My transfer rate when dlin' files is stuck at 79.9. Not pretty. Shouldn't DSL be faster than that, especialy if I'm not browsing? Is there a way to "unlock" this an' make it chug faster? :D

that depends on the server /internet traffic when your getting the download

my dsl runs at 1100 kbps , but most of my dl's are from 70-180 kbps. I ussually use Dap for the larger dl's and run 5 streams (that makes the dl run at 700 kbps normally)

download accelerator plus . it free on cnet or zdnet .

you can set the amount of dl streams and speed , it will also connect to mirror sites and auto decompress the dl .

note it doesnt work on the gamesites with there own downloaders (AE  gigex ) and it doesnt always multi stream if the site doesnt have enough pipes that your dling from.

set it up for manual ... dont incorperate it into the browser or to run on startup .  when i want to use it i just right clic on the dl link and select it .

and the final thing is dont try to set it to exceed your connection speed , it will sort of jam up then .

Sounds like you have the 768/128 Kb/s DSL service.  This would cap download speeds right at 80KB/s.  Uploads would be capped at around 15KB/s.

Don't use DAP.  Download Accel. Plus is chocked full of spyware now, and logs your internet habbits to provide custom ads.  PLUS in the most recent release, they added a ton o' garbage that makes it worthless.  CNET's review of DAP said if you don't mind losing privacey, use it.

Try Internet Download Manager, GetRight, or FlashGet.  From what i've seen, they just as good.

you can work out your max download rate...
its a simple equasion
your internet conection rate devided by 8
if you connect to internet at 576.0kbp's devided by 8 its aproximatly 79.0 download rate,
unfortunatly dsl downloads slower than it uploads so this equasion is often about 10k above your actual download rate.

Hope this helps
