Opinions on this monitor...
« on: September 18, 2004, 09:25:48 PM »
I've been thinking of switching from CRT to LCD.  I ran across this one "on sale" at Circuit City and was wondering if anyone had any more info on it. I haven't been able to dig up a lot of the tech specs via the web.

http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Liquid-Video-Monitor--E19LCD1-/sem/rpsm/oid/94999/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

It's the "Liquid Video Monitor (E19LCD1)" in case the link doesn't work.

Thanks for any input.

Please know that I know almost nothing about monitors before readin' this. Yeah.

Why are people using LCD monitors anyway? I haven't noticed a difference in picture. Only thing I've noticed is that CRTs give off "radiation" (Harmless, but it's there. Big whoop) and LCDs burn in faster (least the TV ones do).

With that rant said, just make sure the resolution you like is supported.  If you want higher than 1280 x 1024, get a different one.

LCDs do NOT burn in at all.  You may be thinking of Plasmas which burn in very quickly.

A good LCD has a much more natural looking picture than a CRT, and is easier on the eyes for extended viewing periods, they also take up less room and are easier to move around.

That said, if you cannot find information immediately on an LCD (or any other product), it probably means that the company doesnt want the specs widely avalable....NOT GOOD.  A cheap LCD is 100 times worse than a cheap CRT.

never buy an LCD sight unseen  There are just too many variables in the technology right now and there are some really crappy LCDs out there.

That's exactly the part that's scary about the afformentioned monitor.

OOZ662, a lot of people are switching because as Alf mentioned LCDs are easier on your eyes if you do computer related work for an extended amount of time.  At least, that's why I'm looking into it.

I'm sure a no name brand LCD isn't going to have the sub 20ms response time needed to keep from blurring objects moving on screen.  Might work OK on office applications but not on games,  but without knowing the brightness and contrast levels and the viewing angle it would be hard to say.
