since 1941 and used as a bombing range for live ammunition, shelling, strafing, and illegal chemicals such as napalm and depleted uranium

Illegal Chemicals? For one DU is not a "chemical" and two, as far as I know, its not "illegal"

These places are starting to reap what they sowed.  If the Govenor had wanted the Navy to stay, maybe he should have supported them and enforced the law by preventing the illegal protests.

Apparently it's a she not a he, and if the quote in Dago's second link is accurate, she wanted the bombing to stop.

You have to love it when they complain about you then whine when you yank their income from them.  Guess they were just fair weather allies so long as they had cash rolling in.

Whether it costs more or not I see that it is a good move.  I'd rather not be stationed somewhere that all they want is our money in the first place.

"After a US Navy bomb dropped in Vieques killed David Sanes, a Viequense civilian, and injured four others on April 19, 1999"

I was there that day...My ship USS LABOON had just fineshed our FIREX-1 5" gun Naval Surface Fire Support qualification. We were less than a mile away. I was the radio telephone talker on our team (The 2nd highest in importance) talking to the spotter at the OP-1 tower. We had just secured from firing. The few of us smokers went topside as the ship began to pull away from the island. We were "smokin' and jokin" watching the KENNEDY's F/A-18's bomb the range when there was a large explosion right next to OP-1. We rushed back down to CIC and heard the whole thing unfold. It was a nasty day. Investigators came out and seized our data tapes from the AEGIS computer systems and took our radio logs.. A sad day indeed.
