"After a US Navy bomb dropped in Vieques killed David Sanes, a Viequense civilian, and injured four others on April 19, 1999"
I was there that day...My ship USS LABOON had just fineshed our FIREX-1 5" gun Naval Surface Fire Support qualification. We were less than a mile away. I was the radio telephone talker on our team (The 2nd highest in importance) talking to the spotter at the OP-1 tower. We had just secured from firing. The few of us smokers went topside as the ship began to pull away from the island. We were "smokin' and jokin" watching the KENNEDY's F/A-18's bomb the range when there was a large explosion right next to OP-1. We rushed back down to CIC and heard the whole thing unfold. It was a nasty day. Investigators came out and seized our data tapes from the AEGIS computer systems and took our radio logs.. A sad day indeed.
