Crash to desktop seems regular
« on: September 21, 2004, 12:09:24 AM »
just wondered if anyone knew why i might be getting CTDs almost on an hourly basis.

the game keeps running and all i have to do is restore from desktop, but as you can imagine, this is not the best thing to happen if i am in a fight.

Or pointing at the ground.  :lol

saying to someone, 'i hit the deck because of CTD' doesnt always cut it after they shoot you down :)

any ideas?

thanks in advance

You have to reposition the monitor.

When you catch a front quarter shot in the right angle through the windscreen it hits your windows key and bam! your on the desktop.

other than that, make sure your not hitting windows key.. maybe remove it?

When you get kicked to desktop, is there any application running? maybe another application takes focus and gives it up right away so you end up on desktop.

Check what other applications are running, or what taskbar icons.

Maybe a taskbar icon changes every hour and pops you to desktop so you can see it? try to get rid of them all...

You have internet time that updates every hour?

Check temperature settings and also be sure other stuff isn't using the same power outlet. Those two 'might' have an impact and are off the wall things to check. They are things you might not consider also.
This is of course if all the other usual things have been checked and still having problems.
To me a CTD stops the game and you have to restart it. If the game just minimizes and you have to maximize it, this does not apply. It could be an accidental hit of the 'start' key as Schutt mentioned or a inadvertant combination of keys pressed.
Example- I had a had a sticky hat switch that would keep the left arrow on numpad depressed. It made all my typing backwards. I thought some weird option had been selected somehow but I figured out that it was just moving my cursor far left after any keystroke. The result, all my typing was backwards similar to typing a single key and moving the cursor left two positions.

turns out it was my 'auto-update' prompt.

i had it set on manual download, and it would prompt me every hour (lol - read my first post) to see if i wanted to update.

have now set it to 'download updates once a week, every sunday at 3am' and have had much less trouble, although still the odd CTD.

thanks for your help you two, much appreciated.
