Gyro are you looking for a standalone unit (in other words not a PC based set up) that you can plug your cable into to record and replay tv shows/movies with?  I prefer Panasonic myself and the Panasonic DMR-E85HS would do that for you plus more.

As for reviews?  I usually head first to epinions.com to see what buyers have had to say about a product:

http://www.epinions.com/pr-Panasonic_DMR-E85H_DVD/display_~reviews

and then I'll browse Google looking for other review on sites that aren't trying to sell that product too.  Such as ... (pdf file)

http://www.homecinemachoice.com/cgi-bin/outputpdf.php?file=WVTV/200407/046_WV_0704.pdf

Note:  I was going to go this route once but found that a PC based system is far superior and much more flexible.  That's because I like to capture, convert, edit and burn video to DVD's for viewing on any DVD machine anywhere I want to watch it on later.

Gotchya!    Phillips, Sony and Panasonic make the kind of unit you're looking for.  Prices came down a lot in the year or so that I'd last looked.  You might browse thier product page on thier websites and then do a comparison of features (not sure if any of them will tackle Macrovision.   At the same time use Google (groups too!) to look for consumer complaints or praise.  G'luck!

I don't think one exists.

This site   http://www.videohelp.com/    is geared more for the PC oriented user but I see talk and tips for the standalone units there too.

and regarding DV in/out on a unit (used that Panasonic model only as my search example. but the value of the feature is noted below)

Hi Gyro, here is a site
with 7 different DVR tested. (note: only in german language).

I have the Tevion DWR-1000. I bought it from a friend for less
then 120€. The price for a new modell is about 200 €
I bought it mainly if not just for converting alot old VHS tapes to DVD.
Its very easy and the record Quality is ok, it depends on the quality of your VHS tape mainly! ;)

Now i record from my PC TV-out on DVD+RW while playing games.
Then later i can edit the DVD and finish the movie if i like.

Recording from TV works great too. But i seldom record from TV.
I preffer to buy DVD movies.

Edit: my DVR-1000 can only record on DVD+R & DVD+RW! but it can replay all DVD's.
