Rear view mirrors on fighters???
« on: September 30, 2004, 01:48:02 AM »
Hey HT I was at the War Hawk air musium here in Nampa ID and they had an F4UD and a P40B in there both had rear view mirrors located on the forward top extirior of the canopy. I asked someone there about this and they said it was standard with the planes because 80% of the time you were checking your 6. makes scense to me. would be a nice feture if it is historically acurate. No rush on this request I still love flying AH but I thaught I would ask.

Looks for photos of Spits, Hurri's P47s, P38s Mustangs etc.  Most if not all had mirrors added to the windscreen.  It's debatable how much help they were however.

Resource hog.

If there are five enemies planes behind you, the computer has to deal with six 3D model objects including your own plane, and additional five more that's "reflected" on the mirror.

Took the words out of my mouth.  Would be nice to have, but also requires a lot more horsepower to handle.  Since we can already through our virutal head into some pretty extreme positions ( in some cases, through the side of the canopy), consider it a trade off :-)

They work fine in IL-2 online and offline. Admittedly my first clue is usually seeing tracers before they pass by, but I still get better frame rate using them than I get in AH.

And how many people can be in an IL-2 session at the same time?

Don't get me wrong, I am not an AH apologists, but that is sort of an apples and oranges comparison.

I understand, my thoughts on it are how many people are you actually fighting at one time in any sim?  32 palyer servers with all 32 in roughly the same area, is an apples comparison to a normal base to base furball?

But back to point, with the relativly lax 6 view we enjoy in AH2, a mirror is somewhat redundant for game play.

Get a TrackIR. Your six view will never bother you again.:)

128 players now I believe, but the net code is probably still beta. I see that many people here somehow think that good graphics like Il2 means that you can't have many players. This is false. The only reason AH2 isn't up to Il2 class is the fact that HTC is a small company that needs more time for development. However, if you give them the time they'll come up with the goods.

On the other hand, the only thing keeping Il2 from being massively multiplayer like AH2 is the net code, but they have already gone from 16 players to 32 and 64 and now 128. At some point in the future I expect Il2 or a third party development of Il2 to be in direct competition with HTC. I hope HTC is ready for them.

yea planes had mirrors on them but i heard most pilots say that u could not see that good in them cuz all the vibration from the engine. they said the most u could see was a blur and by that time it was to late cuz if they were that close u where already dead.

Hey guys,

I've seen also Ponies flying with 2 rear view mirrors placed on the top side of the fixed part of the cockpit, and almost all the spits had one.

Is it too much complicated to implement the rear view mirror !?!?!?

Then why we've migrated from AH1 to AH2 !?!?!?

I would like to see also, contrails during Hi G maneuvers or exaust pipes flashes during nite flyght or better, raining or snowing or a really good pan padlocking with some cues about the lift vector but........I don't know from where to begin :p ;)
