"Max Texture" question...
« on: October 09, 2004, 04:45:05 PM »
Pyro's post made me curious so I bumped my res from 512 to 1024. From my limited experimentation on/off line I've suffered almost no FPS hit at all. I have noticed a couple of brief stutters but they are very minor so far. The increased detail is nice but not overwhelming, but with no real damage to playability I'll keep it unless I see additional problems. Since I have an older (but good) video card I expected more problems. Any techies care to explain what exactly I'm changing...

I have....

AMD "barton core" 2500
Ti-4200 Video Card
1 gig pc2700 DDR Ram (2 x 512)
Gigabyte board (8xAGP)
Windows XP

Frame rates were 75 at 512 (dipping into 35-50 in furballs etc)

Framerates are 71-75 at 1024 (dipping to 30-45) under "stress"...

You get twice the detail up close for objects which use 1024 textures such as custom skins and planes that have had there textures reworked to 1024. The down side is it uses a lot more ram but you don't have a problem there.

ill add a question..

i have a Ti4800 128mb...

but my MB only does 4x AGP.

meaning from what i understand i can only do 512 size (128x4)

can i set 1024?

will it kill FR, crash the game and all that nastiness?
I don't know what to put here yet.

I agree with the humble.  I dont notice an FPS hit at all when i change from 512 to 1024 but it makes 1024 almost unplayable because my screen is stuttering ALOT.

It will freeze up and then go back into motion.  I don't notice FPS loss when it's smooth but the picture freezes off and on alot in which I cannot play on that level.

I've only had the "stutters" on a limited basis. I'm curious if it's Video Card or Memory or CPU related. 99% of the time I'm fine, the other 1 percent is mostly playable (limited freeze) the other 1% of 1% is pretty brutal and of course happens in the best action. I can add more memory pretty easily but dont plan on a Video or CPU upgrade till next year sometime...

I too get the stutters in 1024, but only when engaging the enemy for some reason.  I still have plenty of memory left, so must be something in the way it is loaded...?

Maik,

I have the same problem and double checked that I was preloading textures in system memory (I was).

The thing that stopped the stutters for me was disabling other plane's textures.    Sad, because I want to see these skins on other planes as well.  But I can't dogfight with 1/2 - 1 sec screen freezes in the middle of the action...
