Freezing like that is usually associated with swapping due to low free memory.  How many processes are running in the background?  How much free ram does the task manager show available?

I'm not the best with computers, got mad enough went out and bought a new machine yesterday, amd athlon, processor speed 2.20 ghz, 512kb L2 cache, 400mhz front side bus, 512 mb pc2700 ddr sdra, memory, 200gb 7200rpm ultra dma hard drive.
the first problem I had was the intergrated 64mb card would not support T&L. So i took the geforce2 mx 400 64meg card out of my old machine and put into the new machine, that got me to log in screen.
After picking a room I went  to the tower, evrything worked well until I went to the hanger to pick a plane, then everything froze up worse and longer than ever, bad enough that I had to use the windows key to get out of the game, tried downloading new drivers from the nievda site, turning down acceleration, nothing worked, never could even get off the ground.
pulled up task manager, 43 process, don't know which number shows ram,
when I used the window key to get
back to desktop the task manager showed cpu usage at 100% when i closed the game the usage went to 0%.
thanks for any help

43 processes is way too many.  A typically clean Windows XP installation should be around 19 to 20 processes.

The game should be using 100% of the CPU.  Microsoft designed DirectX to allow it to run at this level of CPU usage.

Did you check any of the "Preload" options in the video setup of the game?  With the video card you are running, you should set the in-game video resolution at 800x600, set the maximum texture size to 256, check the "Preload textures into system ram" option and it should be fine.
Be sure to allow the texture cache to be built.

NOTE:  It can take a bit of time for the game to settle down when you first launch into an arena.  Give it a good minute or so.
