nVidia 6800 based cards...
« on: October 15, 2004, 03:24:24 PM »
Who on here is using one now and what improvments have you noticed?

Also what did you upgrade from (video card only) to get to this point?

I am asking because I am thinking of upgrading from my Ti-4400 based card and buying this one for myself as a Christmas present and want to know what I should expect to see.

Here is my current system specs:

Athlon 64 3200+ (skt754)
Gigabyte K8N Pro
1GB (2x 512MB) DDR400
Maxtor 40GB ATA-133
Abit Siluro Ti-4400 128MB
WinXP Pro SP1
DX 9.0c

Browse back through this forum.  This question has been answered a few times in the last month or two.  Look for threads like "new video card" and ones with the word "upgrade" or "6800" in them.

I'm not trying to be a smartass, but this is almost faq material.  I went from a gf4-4200 to a 6800GT and wrote a few thorough posts in the last 2 months on the subject in at least one forum.  At the very least, a search for user "eagl" in all forums will get you what I've written.  A search for 6800 ought to turn up the experiences of others without everyone having to post repeats.

I recently built a new FX-53 gaming rig using a BFG 6800 Ultra OC.  It plays AH2 very well indeed.

Some relevant Benchmarks for this system:
Aquamark3 - 68260
3DMark2001 - 24318
3DMark2003 - 12688

Offline in AH2 it runs @ 85 FPS (monitor refresh rate) most of the time with a minimum observed rate of 70 near the ground at the field (200') with 3 planes in view with the following settings:

Resolution - 1280 x 1024 x 32 bit
Textures - 512
In game sliders - Max detail and distance
Textures loaded into system ram
Anti-aliasing - 4x
Anisotropic Filtering - 4x
Card Settings - Highest Quality

Online, minimum observed FPS 50.

I'd think a 6800 or 6800GT would match your cpu pretty well.  You don't mention power supply but you have to have a very good one (480W) for the GT and Ultra.

I've had my 6800GT for a month and a half, about the only thing wrong with the card was the price.

The performance boost from my ATI 9600XT was amazing, got Doom 3 packaged with the 6800GT, was able to turn up all effects up to the 'Ultra' setting, very nice!

Right now I have a 400 W power supply but I am planning on moving that up as well since the 6800 uses a higher watt supply.
