I don't know why makers of DVD players/recorders should restrict them to media designated for their particular region of the world. I know that in the past, videos from America wouldn't work here because the screen format here is 625 lines (525 lines in the Americas).
But with digital format DVD, there should be no problem. But it seems that DVD suppliers don't want us buying cheaper stuff from America in Region 1 format. So we have to buy from rip-off Britain in Region 2 format.
Not any more. I've just converted my DVR to multi region and couldn't believe how easy it was. I didn't have to open the DVR case. I didn't even have to touch it.
I just sent off for a conversion kit, which was a handheld electronic unit - looked like the innards of a standard remote control. Had to check the remote control setting on my DVR and make sure it was set to DVD1, and then simply pointed this gizmo at the DVR and pressed the button for 5 seconds. The DVR displayed a weird message I'd never seen before, but it was gone before I could read it. Then... turn off the DVR and unplug, power on again and woohoo!!!! My DVR is multi region! Now I can buy DVDs from anywhere and know that I can play them.
