AA and AF
« on: October 25, 2004, 08:48:05 AM »
It took me all weekend (and one blown up power supply) but I got my AMD 64 3400+, 1 GB Dual Channel, Geforce 6800 Special Edition system built.

I've loaded up AH quickly but didn't have much of a chance to play.  Frame rates looked pretty good even with 1024 textures, and now I'm wondering what I can do to make it look better.

What experience do you guys have with enabling various amounts of AA and AF, and how does it affect performance vs. image quality.

I tried to search the message boards but didn't see a whole lot of detail.

Thanks for any insight you can provide.  When I get home tonight I can try out various settings, but just wanted to get some general input first.

Having followed alot of threads on various boards about these cards I would say that it will not effect framerates a tremendous amount but you will get nice image quality. Which to me has always been what a video card should be for and not for insane 100+ frame rates per second because the human eye can't see that much.

Cool thanks!  I guess I'll try something modest like 4xAA and 2xAF and see how things go.  Its hard to compare without equivilent side-by-side screenshots.  I was hoping someone here might have already done my homework for me :)

I don't notice any FR issues with 2x AA turned on... however, in the game it makes enemy distance dots really hard to see... they get blurred into the sky. :)

With that rig, crank AA all the way.  I can't live with jaggies.

AF in AH gives blurry text and doesn't offer anything else visually.  Keep it disabled.
