In-game communications and squads
« on: October 08, 2001, 01:19:00 PM »
I have been flying AH for about three weeks now, and this is my first flight sim experience.  I really enjoy the game and would like to participate in a more team-oriented manner.

When I join a game, I usually use the map to locate what seem to be logical airfields from which to fly in order to advance my country's front.  I also look for indiators of enemy activity.  Sometimes I am able to become part of what seems like a coordinated effort to defend or advance, and those are the best gaming experiences for me.  What I would like is to become more proficient in playing the game as part of a coordinated effort.  It seems that the game is structured to reward team play, and I would like to play it that way if possible.

Obviously, communication is key.  Do any of you have tips on how to most effectively communicate with others on your side?  I find that I often miss text "radio" messages.  Perhaps I just need to make a more concentrated effort to periodically check my message bar.  Does anyone use voice comms (i.e., Roger Wilco)?

I also wonder whether being part of a squad makes for a better experience.  Do squadmates normally link up when on-line together?  It is hard for me to judge, being on the outside looking in.

It seems to me that if one finds a group of like-minded pilots to fly with, it can only be good -- esprit de corps is always a good thing, even if it is only virtual!  In that regard, what is the best way to go about finding a squad that is a good fit, particularly for someone that is relatively new?

Thanks for reading.

Lone Star-

I agree with you. Some of my best missions are the one's where I a part of a cohesive effort to take a well defended base. I would recommend a squad for what your looking for. I know when my squad's up, on squad night, your required to do your assigned job. (Mine happens to be Goon Pilot)

We've run missions where we've flooded the sky over rook HQ with 15 B-17s and escorts.

It's a pretty incredible sight to see that large a formation.

Meanwhile, if you plan on staying Independant, watch your radio for a while when you first log in. See who's calling the shots, and ask for an assignment. Just say hello, and ask where your needed.

There's never a shortage of bosses on AH.

Also, if you go to the Maproom, and select mission viewer, there may be a mission being run that you can get in on.

Just some tips from a slightly seasoned newb like you.

Well IMO a squad will only increase your enjoyment. However not all are created equal.
Spend a couple of weeks watching which squads
hang together, cover each other, etc. There is a big list of squad web pages on the HTC site.

Also a lot of squads are flying special events like the TOD. That may be a factor in your decision.  http://events.hitechcreations.com/
for more info on Tour of Duty.

Meantime, hook up with a wingman, any wingman. Even if it's just following someone who rolled from the same field.

Ditto to what Ghost said.  It is a big boost to enjoyment if you can fly with someone and talking to them (ie. using Roger Wilco) makes it even better.

Feel free to look up any members of the 412th if you are flying rook.  We always use RW and try to fly with wingmen as much as possible.  If you like flying the pony we won't mind if you want to tag along.

Check out the link below for info on how our squad operates.  The training pages include the sort of comms and tactics that our squad (and likely others too) use.

Enjoy your flying.   :)

LoneStarBuckeye,

If you like to play AH, I would recommend finding a squad.  It's a good way to link up with and fly with others.  I think most squads have weekly missions.  Take your time and check out squads to find one that is right for you.

Reading the text buffer sometimes is not easy but with time you will become better at it.  When you are in a squad, there is a squad channel and the text is in red.  It makes it easier to filter other traffic when you use it.

If you see any CAF flying, your welcome to wing with us.
