Aces High and Track IR
« on: October 25, 2004, 08:59:01 PM »
Not too long ago, I finally got around to getting a Track IR 3 Pro.

Despite all the great feedback on the web about how good Track IR, I was less than impressed at how well it works. All of the profiles that come with the software are just too sensitive with too much jittery behavior unless I sit like a statue.

I finally learned how to set up a decent profile with very low sensitivity and smooth motion...

So I have been using it with all of my flight sims:
Strike Fighters Project 1
IL-2 Forgotten Battles
LOMAC
and of course Aces High.

I just learned something new about Aces High and Track IR:
If you use a snap view (as programmed in my POV hat) combined with Track IR, you can automatically bob your head up/down and left/right as opposed to the normal panning mode. This makes snap view presets completely obsolete and finally gives me what Track IR promised: the most realistic and immersive flight sim experience possible! To my knowledge, none of the other flight sims has Aces High's view system (it has always been the best since the I started playing AH 1.03), but combined with Track IR? Perfection.

In case you have missed or ignored the other thousands of posts about how Track IR will rock your world if you are a flight simmer, please consider the investment. I am still not 100% used to using it, but the more I use it, the more I appreciate it, especially with Aces High :)

So snap view is da best?

And what is your experience with stable "head" position when you are at con's 6 ?????
As for me it is hard to aim and to shoot – I’m forced to disable TrackIR when con is in gun sight. So mostly I use TrackIR for SA.

I have a "body english" issue that has forced me to all but abandon track ir.

In a dog fight I naturally move my head all over the place, instinctively, not on purpose.  No amount of using the "centering" button helps.

I didnt like it in AH, see it as a drawback rather than a benefit when competeing.

Instant views and hat on joystick is far more effective i find.  But then i am more into actual fight than immersion.  I guess it depends on what you want to get out of the game.

But for IL2 and Flight simulator it is fantastic.

In my profile i like having a fair bit of deadband, so it is not effected by small head movements.
I am not ashamed to confess that I am ignorant of what I do not know.

I get the best of both worlds:
I have a buttons mapped to my HOTAS for centering and disabling track ir for gunsight focusing.
My pov hat remains functional for snap views, which only overrides the normal panning when I touch the hat.

Being able to pan, or bob (using pov hat plus track IR) makes for great SA. Then, when I am ready to shoot... center and disable the Track IR which still leaves me with the POV for SA while target-fixated.

i have been a traveling sales man for tir, its made ah and il2 into a whole new expirience, i have been getting alot better because of it. for those of you that have used snap view for 10yrs or so i could see how you would have a hard time giving it up. It takes about 3 days of constant use before you really find out how to use it, and a few months to master it. My gunnery has improved {i can sit up in my cockpit and look over nose for high deflection shots} and my SA is like no other. set up is  key, i found that the custom set up labeled aggressive gives you a good bit of dead pan in the central gunery views and faster ch6 view.  many complain they cant use the pan mode to shoot, i agree, switch it to strafe mode and it will smooth it out for the sublte shots.  use what ever works for you but give tir a chance.  ok natural point wheres my check!

Mechanic

I tend to lean left and right in my chair to pan horizontal and only twist my neck if I want to look at something specific,

plus, a good setup which lets you sit relaxed will stop any neck ache,

OK, thoroughly confused now :)

Have been using Track IR2 offline with latest AH II, and had found that I was getting nowhere near the range of motion available with hat views, particularly the full up and 7 oclock/up and 5 oclock/up views.

I'm not particularly concerned about pure check 6 or check 6/up views, as I've always regarded them as rather 'gamey' and unrealistic.

So, streakeagle, you're saying there's a way of combining BOTH Track IR and snap view?

Do tell..... just how do you do it?

First of all you can still use the hat switch with TIR on....also when doing this moving  your TIR view while holding the hat is like adjusting things with pgup pgdn and the left right arrows...your view LEANS.  Snap views with the TIR are rather annoying if you ask me so I dont do it.  One key is to have a button on your setup to turn off TIR on the fly for things that are better with no movement (dive bombing for example)
