Question from my IT guy - Skuzzy?
« on: November 15, 2004, 07:56:02 AM »
To help us sort out an issue with respect to our connection to the internet from home DSL users my IT guy has a question about packet sizes to and from AH.

There is a problem somewhere in the loop in Bermuda but only, it appears, with large packet sizes.

Is there an average for these packets in AH?

Would you say that in general packet sizes are small or large?

Thanks.

Skuzzy could most likely answer this correctly but I doubt AH is setting the packet size. You can configure your Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) in windows but you should do this with care. Here is an article on how to do this. This involves editing the Registry so if you not comfortable doing this get your IT guy to do this for you.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/learnmore/ppoe.mspx

This is for a PPPoE connection which most DSL providers use.

You may need to lower your MTU size to account for any additional overhead your provider needs but DO NOT increase the size.

The MTU is the maximum size packet before forcing them to split up for transmission.  They can be anything less than MTU.

The game packets are very small, but not too small.  There is no set size.

This is what I needed...the rest sort of sounded like "Charlie Brown's teacher" in my head because I understood none of it.

Thanks.

Our IT guy says thanks.

His comment is:

"Packets under 500 seem to transmit fine, any bigger gives intermittant problems."

I have been able to play AH with this issue going the whole time and haven't seen any real lag problems consistantly.  IT figured this must be the reason.
