Why did they choose the J-85 with afterburning over a low-bypass afterburning turbofan design?

Far as I know the J-85 motor can use Jet-A fuel which would keep flying cost down for Spaceship 1. Other then that I also see it's small and compact.

Theres plenty out there and it has a good service record, their used in the F-5/T-38. Heck there even used in the 262 Project.
