How about a cooperative effort on a HOW TO?
« on: March 23, 2001, 11:09:00 AM »
I'm sure you guys have all been asked "Where can I go to learn to fly Aces High?"  I know I have a lot of friends who are keenly interested in the game but require good documentation to get them going.  Aces High uses a lotta realism, so this isnt a 'push full power and pull up" kinda game.

Upon checking out the various links to people's websites, they are all good but wouldn't it be in everyone's best interest if you guys all compiled it into a manual of some sort?  I have 3 friends that are fumbling their way through Aces High and the lack of a dedicated manual makes it hard for them.  (Odd, huh?  People that WANT to read the instructions...rare, huh?)  I'd like to streamline the learning curve so many of us went through and I kind of feel bad that if someone REALLY wants to learn the ins and outs of Aces High, they have to scour the multitude of websites and links Aces High offers.

I'm not saying one site is better than the other, etc...just...well...wouldnt it be great if the newbie could download one Word/Adobe Acrobat file that walked him through everything from the stats of each aircraft, the dot commands, etc etc?  I know I would have loved one!

I know many of you are fantastic tutors and instructors...if we could get all of your works into one big manual, that would be a real assett for all newbies that are just learning their way in.

That's my 2 cents.  I'll shaddup now and listen

I've written a first flight tutorial that's on my site (Training>Aces High). Been there for some time; it includes a short first flight lesson from takeoff to landing plus a real short gunnery lesson. I'm probably going to re-write it sometime soon when I get a coherent thought.

As for a collective "How To" bit, I've tried that in the past and had squat for response. I'm trying again with a How To section that's currently accepting submissions from any competant pilot. Subjects are pretty much anything that would help someone. Gunnery, bombing, straffing, general flight, landing, takeoff; you name it.

Lepthurn also has a page with some information. I'll repost it here, and hope he doesn't mind.

Getting all of the information possible into one location is kind of difficult with so many contributers.

Please post that link all you like!

I've just added to it today as a matter of fact.  I've been wanting to do this one for a long time.

Your suggestion is a good one BD5, and I know we'll get there.  All I can say is that we are working on it!  Flakbait if you have help guides written up, send the links in to Ronni.  She will link to them for sure, and who knows what else if they fill the niche'.  Send them to me too, I want to link this stuff up as well.

There are lots of good ideas out there... but somebody has to take the time to implement them.  The training corps are trying, but we spend a lot of our time training.  We have lots of good ideas, and lots of things we want to get done, it's just going to take us a while to get things worked out.  We all know what we would like to see, but we need help to actually DO it.  This is something the training corps will be working on actively in the next six months as time permits, but we could use any help we can get!

I'll try to co-ordinate things so we don't overlap each other's efforts too much.  Hmmm, I'm going to think about whipping up a little web page to help organise this a bit more.  Let me get back to you on that one.  If you don't hear anything about it in a week, rattle my chain!  In the mean time, send me links to what you have!  I'll link it from my page at a minimum, and look at adding it to the "collective" if possible.

If anybody has time or content to contribute, please let me know!  sconrad@hfx.eastlink.ca.  Web space is not a problem.  "Lephturn.com" is in the works for me, so I'll be able to host some things.  When we get some good cohesive stuff put together, I know Ronni and HTC will be willing to help make sure new users can find it all as easily as possible.
