Accidental Discharge

Believe it or not - No one was seriously injured. The perp was not struck at all and the Arresting Officer was grazed by a riccochet. As to the Cover Officer's Tactics - ?

Relating to the game - Watch out for those Cut Offs when your on someone's six - They can be DEADLY - and when your holding kills - CO$TLY.

In the last year I have gotten cases in which one of the arresting officers have shot themselves in the leg while trying to holster their sidearm. Fortunately neither were hurt badly and both are back on duty.

But it's a little disconcerting to read the other officer's supplemental which say, "I heard a loud noise and Officer Bob yelled, '****! I just shot myself'".

They taught us about that in the police academy (and showed this video). Mainly the importance of pulling your finger out of the trigger guard when you don't want to shoot. Especially when reholstering.

One comes to mind where three Officers get involved in a shoot out with one perp. Tragic but text book suicide by cop. Distance between them is prob 15 yards. The cops fan out prob 5 yards from each other while perp has his gun to his head. Perp brings weapon down and points it at the cops. Two cops have handguns and one is armed with a shotgun. One cop shoots perp several times and keeps weapon on target while perp is now down. Second cop shots twice and holsters his weapon while the one with the shotgun also fires twice and goes to port arms position. Both did exactly what they do at the range when they go to qualify with their weapon - fire twice and Holster or Port Arms. All that stereotypical stuff aside - TRAINING is most important component in this profession. When the crap hits the fan - you always resort back to your TRAINING. I feel sorry for jobs that put their recruits through a 6 month academy and they never ever get any training like Defensive Tactics Training for the rest of their career. Its like - "There you go - your all set - Good Luck - Dominus Ominus - Don't worry, your good for twenty years." I'm fortunate - My job we train once a month (Different Topics) from September to June. I also run training for our tactical team once a month year round. Complacency can kill!

When I was first on I had decided I would not be warry of a female back up. Later I ammended that to be warry of them all until they had proved themselves to me. One had almost gotten me killed in a knife situation. I later ammended it again to include all newer Officers until proven they had some tactical smarts and were willing to get INTO the fight instead of just watching.

EN4CER,

There's a somewhat famous story in Arizona about a Border Patrol agent that got involved in a prolonged shootout with some bad guys. After the fight was over, it was easy to determine how many shots he'd taken. Because every time he'd reload his wheel-gun, he'd dump the empties into his hand and and line them up on the hood of his Ramcharger. Just like he'd do every time he'd go to the range.

There's a reason why I was taught to always let my magazines drop to the ground while practicing. Because you don't want to get into the habit of catching them and trying to put them back into the pouch if you're in a situation where you need to reload fast.
