Yup you proved that one.
no one "dogged" DOD because of the graphics. Like we said we've been playing since the beta days too. 6 Years later It's safe to say its due for an engine update.
CS is just CS.. repetative basic, and boring as hell. But somehow appeals to the masses. hmm. Most likely the low system specs and the millions of old school HP/compac computers still run it fine. Oh and the rampant cheating due to a HL1 engine that was never really made for online gaming and its many exploitalbe holes.
It's all about quality not popularity if you want to talk about AH holding its own.
But what do I know, you still play text games.
Never said I was the best. I was really good. Good enough to go toe to toe with any other CAL-I or CPL player in CS, but I was never the best. Watch some CPL demo's. The skill level, and more importantly, the teamwork is phenomenal. I was just run of the mill in that skill range. If you ever get the chance, check out QuakeCon. They had a challenege where you could face-off with Wendell (fatal1ty) in Doom 3. You got prizes if you could even kill him. He is the best, and could even get away with saying it.
I have the same beef with DoD you have with CS. Repetative. Run-shoot-shoot-shoot-kill-kill-kill-die-repeat. Aren't most multiplayer games like that though? Even Aces High has the same problem in the MA. Takeoff-Climb-Cruise-Kill-Die/Land-Repeat. I dunno what it is, but some of the repetative games grab my attention & others don't.
You're right & wrong about the game engine. Definately, definately needed an update. Hooray for CS:S! Can't wait for a DoD:S! The original engine though, was built around Quake. Quake was designed for deathmatch, and single-player was an afterthought. This became especially prevelant later in the series, to the extent that Quake 3 didn't even bother with a story-based single-player, just bots on DM maps. Half-Life was just a lightly modified engine with a few more tools added in for the map makers.
To clarify my original point though, 90% of people that get accused of hacking, aren't. The 10% that do hack are just enough to ruin it for everybody else and get legitimately good players banned frequently.
