The Next Great Game....
« on: November 16, 2004, 09:20:13 AM »
Maybe I'm getting old...

But games like Halo 2, and Grand Theft Auto 3 just do not interest me.

What's on the horizon for me as far as gaming goes?

What kind of gamer am I, anyway?

My favorite games of all time were

Aces High
Civ III
Ultima Online
Anyone of a dozen flight sims.

What's the next hot Online RPG?

Flight Sim?

Strategy/War?

Muck,
You fall into the category of simulation gamer. Stuff like Halo 2, Doom 3, Half-Life 2, etc. aren't going to be your cup of tea :) I'd suggest taking a look at The Sims (don't let people fool you, it can be very addicting).. uhm, Evil Genuis just came out, it looks awesome. Check out the Roller Coaster Tycoon series, there's alot of strategy, management, and some great challenges in it. Plus.. you get to build freakin' rollercoasters. I've heard really good things about Rome: Total War, but haven't played it myself. The companies previous titles have been good thought. Warhammer 40k: Rites of War is awesome if you enjoy Warcraft-ish type games... okay so I was at Best Buy yesterday and now I've got a Christmas shopping list in my head...

My favorite games of all time:

All of the id Software titles (from Doom to Quake to Doom 3)
All of the Blizzard titles (from warcraft 1 to world of warcraft)
Counter-Strike
Call of Duty (short, but blows away the medal of honor games)
American McGee's Alice
The Sims!
RollerCoaster Tycoon 1, 2, & 3
City of Heroes (best mmorpg out right now imho)
Aces High II (didn't play 1, and this is the only flight sim I play)

The downside is you can really only play 1 massive online game at a time. Well, at least I can't play more than 1 anyways. Splitting your time between the two makes scores suffer & tangible skills slide away :)

Try Rome Total War as someone else suggested. Then bump it up to the next level. I play from the grand stategic level and find it truly amazing. Especially when you start getting popular with the people and the Senate tosses out the mission to commit suicide...if you do then you gain popularity and prestige within the Senate but if you don't then you get outlawed and the other two houses of Rome along with the senate gang up on you and hunt you down.

Truly a great game when played from any perspective.

Combat Mission Series, if you like a good War Game.

Superpower 2 is a great strategy/political game.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Those games are for kids with consoles. LIke you most of my old favourites were the same as yours except for RPG's. As for games on the horizon I'll be pre ordering Silent Hunter III

But as for now, your already missing out. FS2004 is the greatest gaming experience I've ever had and over Vatsim it easily turns into the greatest sim. Especally when hand flying a steam gauge plane like the 722 over Scandinavia in Fall and making ILS landings on a foggy night.

Plus if you should still feel the need for some Quake like action AH still makes a nice compliment.

EGSS-ESMS

Taxi

Climbout

FL31

Finals

Plus there's always more to challange you, from Bush flying to my current favourite learning to operate the very complex RFP 742 and it's Delco Carousel IV-A Inertial Navigation System. Taking this on Vatsim is quite a challange especially when they start throwing in SID,STARS and Holds.  :D

Might I suggest http://www.TheThirdReich.com ?

It's a WW2 infantry simulator.  It just recently switched from UT2k4 over to Torque as the engine.  Meaning it will be completely free.

My Favs:

Aces High
Falcon 4.0
Fighting Steel
X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter
Grand Prix Legends
(Have yet to find a great Armor combat sim)

New game coming out you might want to think of.
WINGS OVER VIETNAM.
Reported to be a good online sim you can fly with your buddies along the line of IL-2 with the detail of Falcon 4.0 on the aircraft.

Combat Mission Series is not a Sim game(s) but it gives me my Armor addiction fix. Oleg and company are developing a similar title but with graphics along the line of IL2. WW2:RTS? I believe its called.

So you might be interested in those two titles, Jester.

I would love to see a True WW2 Tank Sim too.

Have you tried WW2OL if you like tanks it's pretty good. Bit quake like but if you get involved with a squad you can have some good fun. Pretty intense at times too.

The tanks, optics, gunnery and physics are pretty good for a desktop PC.
