The new rule (IIRC, its only been done a couple of times) is that the last lap cant be under caution, so fans get to see a "racing finish".

You would be right, the new green-white-checker rule forces a race to end under green. However, if a caution comes out after the green flag has been dropped on a green-white-checker finnish the race will end under caution. NASCAR decided that after a truck race ended after 5 green-white-checker starts. Was a wicked good ending though.

Stock cars have some stock elements. The hood, roof, and trunk lid are all from the manufacturer model the car represents. They are allowed very few modifications. The engines are also based on the original stock engine. The biggest thing that effects the model of car is its shape, the shape dictates downforce. Fords had a huge problem with that the last few years. NACSAR has made some changes to the bodies to try to even out the field.

I know the're not much like the original but - I really don't care. I like racing - close racing and NASCAR has lots of it through the field.

Same reason I like touring car - If you'd seen the BTCC race from Knockhill this year you'd know what I mean.  German toruing car is just as good.

Rally drivers are just nutters ............................. .....

By the way for any Brits reading this - it may go against the grain but try a trip to Rockingham Raceway near Corby.  Big new(ish)oval track.  I watched the ASCAR and Pickup Truck race there - the pickup race was brilliant.  Supporting race on the infield track was formula BMW - the one with under 18's trying to prove themselves - fantastic.  In the main stand you can see all the track, both infield track and Oval.
