Upgrade Graphics driver?
« on: November 29, 2004, 12:38:19 AM »
I have a Nvidia GeForce5600 128 Mb. It's approaching 1 year old. Should I upgrade the driver from the mfg. website?
  Thanks,

Picking out the key term as "should I?"
Are you having any graphical problems with AH or any other games?
If the answer is "no", my opinion is no as long as  your current directx version is supported by the drivers your using.
You 'can' update if you want to, but the software you are running pretty much dictates when you 'must' update.

Personally I skip several versions of NVidia drivers at a time because some versions work well with everything I run, while others may cause an odd problem with a particular app.  When I find a version that runs the most apps stablely, I like to keep it until I 'have' to update it to run something new.  More than once Ive had to revert to older drivers because the newest version caused a problem with AH or another game.

I have to agree .. if it aint broke why fix it .

Same thing goes for any type of grafic card .. some drivers work great, others are mediocore, and some just suk.

Of course I'm having problems! My FR was great when AH2 was first released, but have deteriorated lately. I hesitated to upgrade because so many times on this board I've seen warnings against it for whatever reason.

I know the new version of Nvidia's drivers available on their website say they are now 9.0c compatible.  Up until now the drivers from their site havent received WHQL signatures.  I havent downloaded them because I'm using the Omega drivers and I like them much better.

I'm kinda wondering though, from what I understand the reason the drivers werent "certified" by MS is because Nvidia's Control Panel allowed you to turn off Vsync, and MS doesnt want that.  So does that mean that the latest Nvidia drivers no longer allow you to turn Vsync off?  Or has MS given up on that argument?  If anyone has downloaded the newest Nvidia drivers I'd be interested in hearing if that particular control is gone.

Thanks.

I'm running the latest Nvidia drivers 66.93 and they have Vsync properties enabled. I'm also running the coolbits registry entry to allow overclocking. Having no problems at all with the new drivers and even saw a slight increase in my 3Dmark05 scores.

As always, proper uninstallation and cleaning of old drivers is recomended. I didn't follow the instructions completely the first time and actualy got a 600 point decrease in my 3Dmark05 score, following the cleaning instructions for Driver Cleaner 3 I regained those 600 points plus a few more.

I too am running the newest wqhl Nvidia drivers (66.93) and they definately allow you to change VSYNC to your preference.  I noticed an increase in aquamark using these drivers over the omega drivers (which are based on 61.77 drivers).  I am running a BFD 6800GT OC 256mb vid card.  What MrLars stated about proper uninstallation and cleaning of old nvidia drivers is probably the best piece of advice around!  Get 'er Done!

Been a long time since we took up a DeathStar :)

I'm running the 6800GT 256mb OC'd to 410 core 1.12g memory. I'm currious, what are the default settings for the OC'd version you have?
