Airspeed decrease due to firing the guns
« on: December 07, 2004, 03:46:42 AM »
I dont know if this has been addressed in AHII.

My dad was flying the game over Thanksgiving he brought up the fact about why doesnt the plane slows when firing the guns off. He said back when he flew the P-51 and shot the guns the airspeed would decay. F-86, F-100, F-4, F105, F-111, F-15 he flew did the same.
I remembered when I flew the F-14 it did the same when I fired the Vulcan cannon. I would have to step on right rudder when I fired because of the yaw to the left and to maintain the same airspeed I would have to bring in some power.

 Has this been addressed?

Speed does decrease, I don't know by how much it decreased in each plane IRL. It is modelled in AH though.
Is the decrease in speed that noticeable/dramatic? What I'm getting at is that in a real plane there's tactile feedback to what's going on. Maybe it's fairly accurate in AH but that other aspect is part of what you and your dad are missing?
If your dad is right however and you can dig up the documentation to prove it (legitimate tests with numbers) then send it in to HTC.

Not that this thread is something to be proud of, but the topic is mentioned here...

The loss in airspeed due to guns firing is modeled in AH.

I will do some digging to see if I can get some WWII specs on this. My dad say that in the P-51 it was quite noticable, I will talk to him to see were I might find something. Also in the F-86 was noticable to.
In the tomcat it was enough to yaw the airplane to the left and about a 10kt decrease in speed with a 3 sec burst at a 40 degree nose down attitude.

BTW, the firing of the A10 Warthog's Avenger cannon is said to be enough to nullify the full thrust of one of A10's engines; pilots in a shallow dive strafing run actually throttle up a bit before firing.

If you want to see the effect try this. Put your plane in auto climb wait for it to stabilize. Then fire guns while watching the ROC guage. Very noticable! You can even see the effect of fireing all the guns or just sets of guns.
