Patch 3 and RAM
« on: November 29, 2004, 03:02:43 PM »
Just after  taking off from a field with a few hangers on fire I noticed................

frame rate 33

Vidmem 264.2M Used 169.2M Cnt=0
SystemMem 511.0M Used 511.0M Tex =145.4M

So

Should I get some more system memory?

Should I allow system to share vid?

Both?

You need more RAM and your vid card drivers are far out of date as are your direct X files.

Go to nVidia's website to download latest drivers and also update your direct X. Current is 9.0c.

Even with these improvements you won't see a large increase in fps, but you will see some improvement.

Tilt, I would take a look at what is running in the background.

Windows XP/2K will use up ram for caching various files and will dump them as physical ram is needed.

I put some more RAM in  ......an extra 512 making over 1000RAM

but now AH will not start......it will not load terrains off line or access arenas on line. (I can get to the opening clipboard and access my AH account)

I have been thru all variations........

old RAM/new RAM in any of the three RAM sockets....its always the same............

It will start with 512 but not 1012

I am now running with the new RAM but the old one out all is OK........... its not a bad RAM board.

dxdiag reports all OK at 1012 System RAM but AH will not load with that much system RAM in place.

Is there an AH config file that needs refreshing somewhere?

win 98se cant utilize more then 512 in system ram , unless you install the offshore 1.5 service pack ... and even with that it doesnt always work properly .

i would lower the ram back down to 512 and since your running a 256 mb video card i would load the textures into that.

in the ah settings folder is a video8.cfg  thats the file you deleate when you need to try a different settings at the start of ah .

Time to upgrade to XP then?

How do I load textures into the vid card? or is it simply a matter of not allowing them to be loaded to system?

I thought you can only preload one at a time .

now 400 mem used out of 512 isnt to bad

thats around what mine ussually runs , sometimes alittle higher while in the game

I dont think it should realyy max out . that doesnt leave  much room for any extra background programs ..  but then my chain of thought may be backwards (Need Coffee )

there is a workaround...

there is a write-up on windows knowledge base on the exact terminology needed to be used.

read this:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;253912

i did the win95 fix on 98 and it worked fine....

in the system.INI file under:

[VCache]

add the following:
MaxFileCache=524288

NOTE this is not a guarentee, but i did find this helpful myself. modifying the system.INI file improperly can cause your PC to not start up, and be a very very bad thing.
I don't know what to put here yet.

thats what the offshore win 98 service pack does it ups the usable ram amount ..

it still wont like going past the one gig mark though . and it still doesnt like having the basic os partition larger then 30-32 gb's  you can still aquire that pesky swapfile mem problem unless you partition the drive.
