We did a squadron p51 race not too long ago. Same terrain thats always loaded in the TA.
Take off from A1, pick your own route north to 43, must go around the outside of the radar tower, below the top of it. (Yes it was enemy field & ack was on).
From there its down the shoreline to 22, same turn there. (watch the ack again)
Back to A1, but here it gets tough. Do you take the low valley that swings way north?
Do you go up & over the mountain & risk having too much speed for landing? Not to mention its going to slow you down a lot.
Well to make a long story short, I found a different route for the first leg. One that sloped slowly, came diving in & was in 2nd place out of 20 at the first turn.
Closed to 500 yards, but no more with my squadmate in the lead. Neck & neck we ran down the shore, screamed around 22 and headed for home. I headed a smidgeon higher up the hill than he did, and he started pulling away.
Was still within 1k when we had the field in sight, I chopped throttle early, flaps, sideslipped, and set it down fast and smooth.
(Needed to have a good landing to win)
He overshot, came back around & skidded to a stop and we both exited at the exact same moment.
Problem was he had one wheel off & got a ditch, I was in middle of runway with perfect landing and won.
Toughest, heart pounding, teeth rattling race I've ever flown.
So, wanne race? Look me up sometime when I'm in the TA. I'll give ya a taste!
