 okey dokey... i am very confused. i am wondering what sort of improvments i will get if i download the latest version of directx??  any help you guys can give me would be great.

I advise you stay in directX 7 if you have it. DirectX 8 has many bugs and problems causing many machine to freeze...and other weird problems.

Also uninstalling DirectX is quite a pain.

Dx7a could be the most stable DX-library out now. Un-Installing Dx8 is quite easy if you got right tools for it but if games you play don't require Dx8 better stay in 7a.
There's also a un-official beta update from Dx8a(SDK) to 8b thought I'm not going to try it first
