Buy two of the thickest high density foam pipe insulators that you can find.  Slip the slot over the rails and lay it directly onto your car’s roof.  Get a four good, long ratcheted strap tie downs.  If your car does not have prominent roof rain/drip gutters, then open the doors and run the straps through the cabin against the headliner.  Close the doors on the straps to cinch things up.  Also run one from the front of the ladder to the front of the car.  Same thing in back.

I tie all sorts of things to the top of my car all the time, plywood, sofas, a table saw, even a pool table.  A bag full of good ratcheted straps and a few pieces of foam and you can haul anything.

Ratchet straps are the best thing to come out in abundance in the last few years.  We use them to haul on the trailer, tie down 4 wheelers, and I take a few with me in my flight bag wrapped up tight to tie down an airplane instead of taking rops.  Works great!

Get 4 foot of rope and tie it to your bumper. Note* Buy a ladder 2' longer than you need to allow for wear on the way home.
