Axis Orders

The Allies failed to destroy both Axis airfields, and therefore failed to meet their primary objective

Allied victory on points.
Axis victory on tactical results (not that it matters  :) )

Final Analysis
On July 25th, 1944 Operation COBRA started, clearing a path for Omar Bradley's 1st Army into the heart of France.  Once clear of the Bocage elements of the 1st Army split off to be formed into Patton's 3rd Army.  As Bradley and Patton move on, Montgomery also makes his break and begins heading up the coast toward Calis.

The fighting continues...

In an unrelated development, Hermann Goring suffered minor injuries when a podium collapsed as he was being awarded a medal for the outstanding performance of tcgx and GCW.

Designer Notes
This was my first FSO event as design CM, and it would take forever to list off the things I've learned.  I made some glaring setup errors at the start which won't be repeated.  I'd like to thank all those who participated.  Hope to see you all in the next FSO, probably sometime early next year with all the holidays coming up.

Tactical victory for Axis??

With all due respect Puck. How do you see a tactical victory for the Axis?

Axis were to destroy 40, based on points, they damaged ~32%.

Axis were to defend 38, Based on points, it was ~98% destroyed.

Axis lost more aircraft, 85 to 71.

Axis did well defending 37, ~22% destroyed.

I see 3 Axis Failures, 1 Axis success.

Allied were to destroy 38, It was ~98% destroyed.

Allied were to defend 40, It was only damaged ~32%.

Allied suffered less in plane losses, 71 to 85.

Allied were to destroy 37, it was only ~22% destroyed

I see 3 Allied victories, 1 Allied failure

Even if you only look at Primary objectives. (not a reality in war) The Axis lost 38, and maintained some use of 37. They were to defend BOTH 38 and 37, not just 37.

WWII was a war of attrition, at the end of Breakout, the Axis have lost more that the Allied.

I don't see anyway that the Axis achieved a tactical victory, It would be a stretch to give Axis a Tie in this frame. Let alone a victory.

But this is only my humble opinion, and we all know what opinions are like. :lol

HUGE difference between tactical victory and winning.  The allies won all three frames, though the last was really pretty close.

I gave the axis a tactical victory because they met the primary objective; defend A37 and A38.  A38 got pounded, but A37 was barely touched.  The allies failed to meet their primary objective, namely the destruction of these two bases.

Obviously both sides can't meet their primary objectives.  This is not an accident.  The Japanese got a points victory at Perl Harbor, but it went to the Americans on tactics; they kept their aircraft carriers, which was the prime objective.

"Tactical" victory is totally meaningless on the third frame.  It's mostly meaningless the rest of the time.  I use that to stage the next frame, and it represents the ability of "other" non AH units to take advantage of a given situation.

In this case since A37 was knocked out but A38 was not, I'd put the allies slightly defensive on a "hypothetical" fourth frame.  Probably make the big fight over A40 this time.

Really I just added that to give myself something to do between frames.  Otherwise I'd have all three mapped out before anything started, and "winning" would only be about points.  Now it's also about map position.  If everyone thinks thats more work than it's worth I can cut it out easily enough.  For me it's more fun not to know what next week's map will look like until today's battle is fought.
