Yep, that's it...

It's 'well' when used to modify a verb, as in: 'He writes well'.

It's 'good', however, when used to modify a noun, as in: 'he uses good English.' (Good is in reference to the English, you see, not to the using).

The latter is a bit awkward, of course, but that's only because the word 'good', in general, comes off as very ambiguous and overused--a bit like the word 'nice'. Substituting it with 'proper' or 'coherent' or 'eloquent' makes the sentence much easier to read.

So one can write good english badly?

I assumed the modifier was for the writer's ability, not for the language itself.

PS: GS writes better English than I can write Norwahogian...it was just an attempt at an humorous observation.

Yes, exactly... Badly modifies the act of writing, while good modifies the language. Again, if you want it to sound slightly less lame, you might say: 'one can write proper English improperly'.

And while this may sound like a lame discussion at 6:30 am, let it be known that I have an exam in 90 minutes, and this is my way of waking my brain up.

Well, it's both--writing being a noun in this case as that's a piece of writing.

However, if you're trying to write dialog for a character that speaks some sort of Cajun/Creole/Redneck dialect, this may well be bad English that's well written. If the goal is to write how the character truly sounds, proper grammar is irrelevant. Generally, dialectic dialog is accomplished by spelling words phonetically, adding apostrophes in the middle of words for unconventional inflection and the like, and sticking to key phrases and favored grammatical errors(such as double negatives). Mark Twain was a master with this sort of thing.

We're getting way off the subject here.
