Phone Line Trouble, Again!
« on: December 14, 2004, 02:23:07 PM »
A while back I had problems with my Internet Connection (56K Dialup), For some reason My Computer was connecting at only half of 56K, sometime less.

I chalked it up as Service Provider, Phone line problems. As mysteriously as they arrived they dissapeared.

Then All of a sudden, Starting last week We had trouble with the Internet line having no dialtone, or an off the hook signal.

Then yesterday, The local police call the house, reporting a 911 Hangup from our Internet line, And the off the hook signal or no dialtone increased in frequency.

Then again this morning, Another 911 Hangup.

What the hell is up with my phone line? Am i being Phreaked or Hacked? Any Clues?

Its fine one minute and I log off, Then I try to log on some time later, and theres no dialtone, or its off the hook.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Ditch the dial up if you can...

There may be something on your computer that's turning the modem on and dialing out, or it just isn't disconnecting itself (can happen with corrupted drivers).

If you get the problem again, you should pick up your reciever and listen to if the line is dead or the modem is using it. If it is using it, or sounds dead, unplug the land line from the modem and see if that fixes the dead/used line.

Unfortunatley DSL is not available in my area, and it seems Cable Internet may get here faster. So we got that solved, but until they can provide it were stuck.

Thanks for the help, I'll try and do that. Now that you mention it, I might have figured the culprit, or at least a better clue.

Thanks Wulfe.

SW got it right. Drop dialup the first chance you can. I wouldn't have a landline at all if it weren't for the house's alarm requiring it. Now, telco's (specifically SWBell or whatever it's named now) won't gaurantee a connection over 2400 baud on regular phone lines, and they're a hassle to work with.. but it's worth calling them. They'll at least be able to help isolate the problem.
