I loaded service pack 2 on my xp home system.

Now everytime I turn on my system after reaching the desk top, I click on explorer and BOOM back to rebot.

Then I get error warning of DRIVER problem.

Could this be the radeon 7000 driver do I need to up date the driver?

id be looking for a virous ... most likely its attached to ur intardnet explorer .exe
along with causing other exe's to crash.

If you updated XP with SP2, and you had a virus before the upgrade, there is a good chance you will be looking at a complete reinstallation of the operating system, depending on the virus or spyware program.

I had the same problem, so i reformatted the HD and re-installed XP, the "you have 30 days to register" came up again. tried to register it again and got the error "that number is aready in use" I called tech support and they said i'm SOL. They won't let me use my old registry number they told me I HAVE to buy another copy. I told them I had to reformat the HD, it's the same computer!! I was told once again to buy another copy!!!

Somethings missing, I've reloaded my XP Pro 3 different times with no problems at all (all on reformatted HD's). As a side note legally they cant deny you use of the program within the scope of the user agreement. Your allowed to install and use the program as often as you need to as long as its being used on ONE machine at a time. As long as you have your original documentation and you registered the program under the same "name" you shouldnt have any problem at all.

Video card drivers and an upgrade to sp2 can be problematic.

Be sure to update to latest drivers before installing sp2.

In the past video card manufacturers designed the drivers to access memory however they saw fit.

BUT now microsoft have decided due to lots of support queries regarding memory clashes that they "microsoft" are going to dictate the areas of memory available to hardware.

So if you have an older video card driver that in SP2 is accessing memory outside of the microsoft specified area you will get a big dump very fast.

The problem is related to the AGP gart driver (from memory was a while since i researched it) basically microsoft recommend you stick to the SP2 supplied version which is gauranteed compatible.

Somewhere on a bbs in cyberspace i posted all this to help others if i can find it again i will link it as it supplied links to microsoft detailing the problems possible.

Also note there are different recommended AGP drivers dependant on AGP type ie 3.0 or 3.5 also cpu dependant.

Any sort of lockups with a new SP2 install i would immediately put video drivers as the number one suspect.

So its not just AGP3.5 compatible that are affected. Because of the difference in architecture the AMD 64 cpu,s have yet another different driver, GAGP30KX.

Personally i still find the VIA latest drivers to be perfectly stable and best performance with SP2.

However i did install SP2 on another machine and had LOADS of trouble, pretty obvious where the problem was after looking into this issue previously.
Problems were locking up randomly sometimes on load and other times when clicking on the windows close box etc.
Rolled back the computer to a stable pre SP2 state (so it would keep running) checked and found it was running on Cats 3.2
Updated video drivers and reinstalled SP2 for fun
No problems at all straight in and stable as a rock.
So old video drivers will cause problems with SP2, to the point where it was totally unstable.

Was not an AMD 64 machine it was an older machine with onboard graphics, so the incompatible video drivers can hit any machine with SP2.

If you can just roll back to a pre SP2 state and then update your video drivers before trying again.

BTW Nuttz you had best grow some then go back and talk to microsoft again

If you get the same tard reply go over him to a supervisor I cannot believe you accepted that stupid response.

I have in the past talked them in to giving me a free key for XP for reasons too long to go into here

and the first response was no way, just be polite and ask to take it higher.

Windows XP requires reactivation if you.......

A) Install on a clean format HD with the previous install unavailable.

B) Change at least 6 of 10 major components XP tracks in your system and try to reinstall (i.e. they think you are trying to install it on another computer).

If you have to reactivate, you get a 800 number to call and you get a Microsoft help desk person who will ask you some questions and then give you a very very very very very very very very VERY long number you have to input to reactivate your installation. I had the same problem, and they never gave me a bit of trouble. 5 minutes on the phone and I was up and running.

Yes, I threw it out and got XP another way. The original number they gave me was a billion numbers long, I'm very disapointed in the tech support I got. It was the same HD just reformatted. I don't know why I was told I have to buy another copy.
