I hope the air crew survived that crash. I've seen a C-130 take off with RATOs and it was a sight. Never seen one land in 300 ft though.

Sometime after the Russians rolled into Afghanistan, a political cartoon about the hostages in Iran was published in my local newspaper.

It showed two Russian tanks sitting on a mountain in Afghanistan next to a road sign with Tehran marked on it. One Russian tank commander says to the other,

“Hey Ivan, Let’s go spring the hostages.”

That cartoon was taped to the inside top of my toolbox for years. Think I finally took it down before the first Gulf War. If the Russian Army had sprung the hostages, it would have been all right with me.

Russians did free some hostages. The Iranians took a few Russians as hostages in the crisis. The KGB went out and found the Mothers of each Terrorist. They sent each terrorist a picture of their mother and one hand. The Russians were released that day.
