A real tailslide is nothing more than an aerobatic maneuver where the plane pulls up into a 90 degree climb until it stalls and then falls back to earth with its tail pointing downward.  Once some speed is gained, hard rudder input brings the nose back down.

I cant imagine a SINGLE instance where this maneuver would be of benefit in ACM since at the top, the enemy is completely defenseless.  The people you were talking to may be referring to something else but a real tailslide is strictly for an airshow not for combat.

PS...I remember a contest back in WBs where you were supposed to film (take picture?) of yourself using smoke and doing a tailslide.  Was pretty cool.

Hehe, I remember that Dingy.

Airshow smoke was cool, but the trails feature we have here in AH is far more useful for demonstrating maneuvers.

A tailslide...I thought it was that maneuver when you land on a CV and get slung off the back deck (he he he).

How is a Tail Slide different from a Hammer Head?

Sounds like maybe a skid? In ACM skidding your AC would allow you to alter the attitude of the AC without simultaneously changing the direction of the AC. For getting guns on an enemy while you are making a high speed pass, or at a very high angle of attack. ? maybe that is what you mean?

Nexus,

With a hammerhead you turn right away.  With a tailslide you basically stay pointing up and fall back down tail first.

In air combat you would want to turn as soon as possible, so a hammerhead or some other reversal would likely be preferable.
