It may be a bit rough around the edges, but if you ever wondered about changing your gunsight but we not sure how go check it out.

Good stuff.  I love deflection shots and the La7 is difficult to do them in.  I'll have to work on my own gunsight.

On another subject, I've seen some gunsights with lines for deflection shooting.  Does anyone know how those deflection lines work? Can you give me an example? Sometimes for those very high angle deflection shots, I'll pick a point I think they nme plane will be and just lay down a stream of lead waiting for the nme plane to pass thru the shells.

I do that all the time, tricky part is getting the timeing down so you don't waste ammo. Ussually 2 or 3 of those & they are missing something vital. It works as a very good defense against scissors. Just slow down, ping the heck out of em when they cross, and stay in the center.

As to deflection type gunsights, you might check with Lephturn, ammo, etc.

Grumps, Deflection is shooting at a point in front of your target plane so the bullets hit the target.  Here is more good information on the topic:

Deflection shots are simply shots taken where the target is at an angle from your relative position.  This requires you to compensate for the angle by "leading" the target (i.e. aim ahead of the plane) to hit it. Only straight head on (HO) attacks or attacks from the dead 6 o'clock position will have zero deflection or angle and don't require you to "lead" the target.

You know Ghosth I tried elevating my gunsight in the La7 like you mentioned.  Because the center of the sight was now raised my shooting was off.  The bullet stream was hitting below the center of the gunsight.  totally threw off my gunnery.  Is this normal?  Did I do something wrong or is it purely a matter of geometry in that when you raise the sight of course the bullets will now track below...  :confused:

Spitlead, reread the tutorial, If it's not clear let me know so I can fix it.

Raising the sight is half of it, the other half is setting your head position so that the bullets are going where the sight is.

Changeing the sight without setting your head position correctly WILL screw up your shooting.

Mind you it won't help a lot in a high Gee turn, but it does help IMO.

One tip to help re-sighing your head position when you use an elevated sight.  Put a mark on your monitor (you can use a highlighter or tape). Put the mark on the default sight and head position.  Now when you adjust your head position for the new sights, just line up your new aim point with the mark on your screen.  When your done adjusting head positions in all the aircraft, you can remove the mark. It is much faster then watching tracers.

On some planes, an elevated gunsight will give a slight advantage. On others, it's a waste of time.

Also, am wonderinf if it really is that simple. It seems to me that my shots are more lethan in normal mode than when using an elevated sight, but of course the elevated sight gives a wee advantage in terms of looking over the nose.

For me, flying LW planes, I still have to put so much lead that the target always is far under the nose.

But custom gunsights look too cool   :)

i use a custom gunsight suited to myself but you cant go far wrong if you use reference points on your canopy frames,(this works better on some planes than others).for those high deflection shots.deflection shots taken under the nose only become easier with practise and knowing your choice of plane  :)
