Top Hat View Setting
« on: August 16, 2001, 10:44:00 AM »
Hello all you Aces High dudes?
My question comes from many weeks of frustration, (years actually if you count air warrior time).
One of my main problems in losing sight of opponents after a shortr while.  The next thing I see is my plane being blown apart.  I attribute this to a severe lack of situational awareness prompted by my inability to follow my opponent with my top hat views.  I have a MS SW Precsion Pro with 8 view settings.  What is the best grouping for views and how does head poisition effect things.  Perhaps this question reveals my fundamental lack of ability, but I am curious to find out how my opponenents seeem to be able to follow me and I can't follow them.

Thanks

For starters, have a read of this:
 http://lephturn.webhop.net/views.htm

This explains a bit about the AH viewing system, and how to configure and use it.

You should be using snap views, and your hat should be set up to give you back view, back right, right, right front, up 45, left front, left, back left.  One of the critical ones is having your forward or up hat position show you that 45 degree upward view.  The second bit is to have another button used as UP, and this can be used as a modifier for all the other view and to look straight up.  I use the A button.  (I use the same stick.)

Have a read, and ask any other questions here.  Then we can set you up with a training session if you want for some practice.  :)

For starters go here http://users.andara.com/~sconrad/

And read Lephturns article on mastering views.

Next, go to setup and set either a pair of keyboard keys, or a joystick button to stickset. (This part can be tricky, give me a yell if you need help)

On my Sidewinder I use button 2 to alternate
stick sets, stick set one are the 8 default views. On the second stick set, set up all 8 UP views.

Ohh and while your at it you can use stick set to switch between full guns & primary only. Very handy for those AC that have both MG & Cannon.

Or give me a yell if you see me online.

Hey, thanks alot Lephturn and Ghost.  I appreciate the help.  I will dig into this weekend and see if it doesn't help my SA improve.
If it does, and I still die, then I know that I should go ahead and drive tanks!!!!

No need to drive tanks if you don't want to, simply drop me a note here or via email and we'll get you setup with a trainer.  We can have you competitive with a bit of work, trust me.  :)

Heyas

I use the same stick!  What I have set is this: the hat forward = up+front and the rest of the views are all around me horizontally.  I use the A button+the hat for all my 45 degree up buttons.  The A button is also my up view.

What I suggest you do as far as moving your head position is this:  Get in the plane you wish to setup, takeoff at a base back from the front, and let the plane climb on auto.  Then cycle through all the views, and adjust your head position to minimize obstructions in all views.  Each time you get into a plane you've not setup b4, go through the same process.  I use the little button low and to the right of the hat for my zoom view as well btw.

When I first get into the plane I also hit F9 immediately.  I prefer the instant view system.  The pan-view is an abomination, which can be very disorienting, and can even cause motion sickness.  Think about it.. next time you turn your head from straight ahead to 90deg to the right.  You don't "see" anything as your head is turning, your brain/eyes are able to tune all that out to prevent any disorientation.  On the pc screen this cannot be replicated yet...

My stuff

Well, the f9 key sure helps alot.  That panning was a pain and the snap view is much much better.

Okay, I have downloaded the view settings from the site Lephturn linked to and put them in the setting folder.

But, new issue: it seems that once a head position is saved, i.e. for rear view, then when you go back to default view, you can no longer move the head position up down, right, or left.  Is this correct or am I doing something wrong?

Strange... I'm not sure what's going on there.  I can move my head position at any time, it just doesn't go back to that new position again unless I press F10 to save it.

Sometimes you can have trouble if you have to press too many keys/buttons at once.  There is a limit there.  :)

You cannot adjust head position while in the F9 (instant) view mode.  Press the F7 key, and then adjust your head position, press F10 to save, and once you are done, press F9 again to return to instant view mode
