Keep Losing Internet Connection...
« on: November 29, 2004, 04:33:01 PM »
Hi Guys,

Hopefully you can help me 'cause I'm at wits end. Lately I've been unable to play the game due to an unending series of Discos. I'm a Windows 98SE / Road Runner Cablemodem user, and generally after playing for about 5-10 mins. I get a LOST UDP... message followed quickly by Host connection lost and back to desktop. Meanwhile, RR Medic will be showing "NO DNS" with the classic red X. However, I'm still able to reach the Web. Any ideas on what is going on? I've tried disabling my Anti Virus Software and Zone Alarm with no joy - besides they were both running fine up until just after the latest patch came out.

Thanks!

Upgraded the USB drivers and NVIDIA drivers to the latest for my Mother-Board. Still Getting disco'd every ten minutes or so. Either I fix this or paying for December will be a waste of $15 I can spend on presents for the kids.

HELP!

have you at any time run or installed an internet optimizer for your modem?

Is your cablemodem a loaner, swap it out for free.

That's all I come up with

First off, did you read the internet connection sticky at the top of this forum?  Skuzzy posted some good information there that could help you out.

Really, anything that interferes with your connection to the HTC's servers can cause you to lose UDP and switch to TCP, and/or get dumped from your connection entirely.  This includes your firewall and Anti-Virus.  You said you disabled them and tried AH with no luck, so we will assume for a moment that those are not the culprit.

Are you using a router in between your computer and the cable modem?  Try doing without it, and plug in directly to the cable modem.  See if that helps.

Do you have anything setting on top of the cable modem, that it might be overheating?

Try powering the cable modem down for a minute and then power back up.  Sometimes they need that.  I've had mine slow down so much that I can barely bring up websites, let alone play games online.  Roadrunner reccommends 1-2 minutes before powering back up.  They also reccommend checking the cable connection and the ethernet cable plug-ins, as sometimes these can work lose over time, especially if you move stuff around much.

Run a route trace to the AH server and see if you have any bad hops in your route.  One bad router can spoil your night, but once you spot the trouble you can complain to your ISP and they can then complain to the owner of the bad router.  Frustrating as it is to have a problem you cant solve, at least you'll know what the problem IS.

Assuming your equipment checks out, do you have any background processes running in Windows?  When you say you turned off the AV and the Firewall, did you let them start at bootup and manually turn them off, or did you set them not to start with Windows and do a fresh boot without them?  Zonealarm in particular holds on to resources even after you shut it down, you can lose 4% - 6% of your system resources just by having it start with windows and then shutting it off manually.  Try killing all the applications you can that run at startup and then try AH.

Especially since RR Medic shows a "No DNS" error, you either have an application conflicting that wants to take over your internet connection (like zonealarm, or even AOL for that matter) or you could have a physically bad cable modem.

You can also check to see that your DNS hasnt been messed up.  In the "Run" dialog box, type Winipconfig and select your ethernet adapter.  Your location-specific DNS info should be the top line.  For instance, mine is "hawaii.rr.com" and some more after that.  Yours will be the same, only location-specific for your RoadRunner connect.  If it's been changed, I'd be worried.  Could even be a Trojan or a virus.  Do you run spyware detectors?

If all else fails, try calling Road Runner and see if they have any suggestions.  RR Medic doesnt fix everything.  Good luck!

Hi SOA2,

Thanks for that comprehensive reply. Here's a thought, I notice that my "System Memory" is always maxxed out at Dump Time. Could that be doing it and how would I get it back.

In answer to your suggestions:

1) I am not using a router between my Cable Modem and my PC - my cable modem is connected directly to the PC via USB. I know everyone recommends a network card, but this has worked fine for me for over two years.
2) My cablemodem is freestanding and feels relatively cool.
3) What is the IP of the MA so I can run a direct trace?
4) I have lots of background processes running, but AVAST and Zonealarm have never been a problem before, I did recently upgrade AVAST, ZONEALARM, and AH2 though, so one of the new patches could be the culprit.
5) DNS seems good and I check the system with AVAST and SPYBOT every 2 days or so.
6) Could be my Cablemodem has gone bad (I own it - Toshiba PCX1100U - running newest drivers), I'll try unplugging it tonight and see if the performance improves tomorrow AM.
7) I've just installed DaCSpeed - I'll see if that helps.

THANKS!

This is from Skuzzy's sticky about Internet connections.........

Quote
3) If your router or cable/dsl modem is connected to your computer through a USB port, you can expect to lose UDP a lot, as well as unreliable connections to the servers overall. You should have this device connected to an Ethernet port or unreliability will result.

If you've been using it for 2 years and no problems, I'd hesitate to point you in that direction, but here's a thought.  Is that 2 years on the same computer?  Unpowered USB ports are notorious for being unreliable.  Especially if you've been using the same computer all this time, maybe the power supply is getting weak?  Or have you possibly added new hardware that is drawing from the power supply and increasing its load?  If you must stay with the USB connection for your cable modem, try switching to a powered USB hub.  Of course, for the price of a powered hub you could buy a network card, but then I dont know if your cable modem has an RJ-45 cable connection or if it is just USB only.

I'm at work right now and I dont have the MA server's address handy.  I know its been posted on the BBS before though, you can try doing a search.  Or maybe someone who has it handy can post it for you.

Good luck!

Download ping plotter - read the sticky near the top of the tech support forum - there you will find the IP addresses.

This should tell you if its a net conn issue.

Otherwise, spy ware is a big problem these days. IF thats the case use both spybot and adaware to check.

I used to get lots of disconnects, especially when strafing with US machine guns. It turned out I had several problems, all of which you might consider.

First: You really should get a router. It blocks lots of nasty hack attempts on your pc. I used to run ZoneAlarm plus my router, but noticed that once I had installed the router, ZA logged zero attempts to get into my PC. So I quit using ZA. ZA is still useful for monitoring your PC trying to go out to the internet w/o your permission, but all in all IMHO it's more trouble than it's worth if you have a good NAT router.

Second: I concur you should get a NIC. I have extra ones since the new mobos all have built in ethernet connections. Send me a email and I'll ship you one of my old ones.

Third: My cable modem was going bad. It was two years old. Replaced it with a new Motorola Surfboard, cured 75% of my problems.

Fourth: My router was going bad. It was the original Linksys Jurassic period router. Replaced it with a NetGear that has much lower latency. If you're shopping for routers, get one with the lowest possible latency. A year ago it was the Netgear.

The new cable modem and router cured my ills. I very rarely have a lost connection now. I've had a few CTDs lately but that was due to OCing my vid card, not internet connection.

A couple of more things to check:
Make sure your cable connection outside your house is good. Once a year I take some super fine sandpapaer and polish up the copper cable cable wire and reinsert it in the outside splitter.

Check how many splitters you have on your cable. if you have several TVs plus your PC, it could be losing out. You want as few splits as possible between the cable company's drop at your house and your PC. Those splitters also are of various quality. I replaced all mine with high quality splitters.

I strongly reccommentd you reviewing this web site to make sure your cable, modem, and splitters, are set up to their optimum:

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/cabletech#10

Here's an example of the info at this website:

Q: What kind of signal levels do I want on my cable modem? (#3412)
A: Downstream Power:
You generally want between -12db and +12db. Most modems are rated from -15 to +15. Anything less or more than that and you may have quality issues .

I personally prefer to not have less than -7db. If you want to raise your signal level a bit, check my troubleshooting and splitter section.

Downstream SNR:
This number is best over 30, but you may not have any problems with down to 25. Anything less and you will probably have slow transfers, dropped connections, etc.

See my "Downstream SNR" definition for more information on this.

Upstream Power:
The lower this number is, the better. If it is above 55, you may want to see if you can reconfigure your splitters. Anything above 57 is not good and should be fixed ASAP. (This is getting pretty close to not being able to connect.)

Upstream SNR:
Anything above 29 is considered good. The higher this number is, the better. If this number is below 25 and 29, you have a minute amount of noise leaking in somewhere. If it's anything less than 25, you want to get it fixed as you may have a lot of packet loss or slow transfer rates.
<<<>>>

Most cable modems have a way to login to the modem and get the above info right out of it.
Hope we can get you fixed.

Well Seagoon has not posted, but he told me in the MA the other day that the Ethernet card I sent him did the trick. The problem was his USB connection from his cable modem.
