Convergence Setting (Assist Freak)
« on: December 21, 2004, 06:14:19 PM »
I was wondering what everyone had their Convergence setting set to for the following planes:

Spit5
Spit2 (Seafire)
F6F
N1K1

The reason i ask is because i dont like to BnZ I like to turn fight and these are the planes i use and it seems like i get alot of hits but never able to finish the planes off (I end tours with 100 Assist and like 80 kills)

My squad mates told me to set all my Convergence the same but at what distance is my question.

P.S does anyone know any other planes that may suit my playing style (Turn fighting)

It depends on what range you normally open fire at.  I fire at close range no matter what plane i'm firing so set my convergence at 250yrds.

I believe convergence is to everyones own taste.  Other people have it staggered, others all at 400 (which i consider too far out).

All i can say is experiment and see what suits you.

For the F6F I use 375 on all guns.  Then again I get a lot of assists too, but more kills.  It seems to work very well for me, at any rate.

Turn tracers off in it too.  Not because it will "help you get better at aiming" or "teach you to actually aim" (of course these are added benefits)...  Simply because six 50 cals throw out a lot of lead, I find them visually distracting and I can't tell when I'm landing good hits with tracers on.

On Spit 5 and 2 I have hispanos to 300.  The 303s at 350, if I can hit with the 303s I open with hispanos.  The N1K I have outer guns at 300, inner at 275 as the bullet drop in those is kinda bad.  For the f6f, and all planes with 50s for that matter, I put the out guns on 350, middle at 325, and inside at 300.  If you like them all at one place, I would recommend 300.

BTW, great to see you back DVDA, been a long time.

 The range is a bit too far out, I'm afraid. If we take a look at the planes you use;

- Spit5
- Spit2 (Seafire)
- F6F
- N1K1

You will notice that these are all more or less 'slow' planes at deck, with the exception of the F6F, which would be rated at about average.

You will also notice that these are all wing-armed planes(main armament placed at the wing area).

In a MA infested with '44~'45 planes, the window of opportunity to open fire upon an enemy aircraft with those planes, is very small, because they are so slow.

What makes it worse, is that these planes you use are all wing armed, so only at the single convergence point you've set will all the rounds meet, to deal out maximum damage. Further or closer than that exact range, and it is highly likely that your firepower will be reduced, in some cases by more than 50%.

So I recommend that you reduce your convergence to around 275~300, and only fire when the enemy con is inside that range. I know that it is difficult to do so in such slow planes, but empirically, trying to hit a plane speeding away from you over 400 yards with wing armament is a waste of ammo, no matter how far you set your convergence out.

Im mostly flying spitV/seafire or hurricane. I try to get up close before i start firing. Usually icon d200 - max 400.

Got convergence on all guns in spit to 225. Sometimes i have the 303s convergence at a greater distance as i use them too 'spook' extending planes into turning again. But the key for me in Spit was to fire hispanos and 303s seperately, because i noticed if i fire both at the same time, the hits i get are only 303s, probably because of the different ballistics.

In Hurri IIc i got the inner pair at 200, the outer at 225.

These settings work fine for me. I went offline and played around with different settings, using the drones as targets.

Edit: If you want to use the 303s to kill in spit, i would set them even closer, maybe 175, since at that firing distance its easier to aim at parts of the plane. For 303s you need to concentrate *a lot* of them bullets on the same spot to do any damage. But i guess the best and easiest way is to shoot your hispanos wisely and go rearm when you run out of canon rounds.

If I'm flying a plane with all MG's I set my convergance at 300.  The farthest range I will risk a shot is 400, and even then if I think I can get closer I will wait until I'm at 200 before shooting.  If I'm flying a plane with cannon, I set my convergance at 200 and I dont usually shoot until I'm inside that range.  Many of the planes I fly have limited ammo, and it's teaching me to use very small bursts to check my aim, and even once I'm sure of the shot I try not to use much ammo.  3 or 4 cannon rounds are plenty to blow major chunks off of any fighter, as long as you can land them on target.

For the Spit V and Seafire, I have all guns (.303s and 20mm) set to 225 yards.

If you graduated "Ray Charles gunnery school for the blind and frame-rate challanged" like me, set your convergence at 300 or less.

I know it's really annoying to see your fire goes crosseyed at longer distances, but at least the good shot oppertunities will pay off.

on quad cannon planes (which I don't remember the last time I flew one in the MA) I only fire 2 cannons at a time anyway so I set 2 under 300 and 2 (inner ones) to 400-450 for those long tail shots (or HO...).

This issue makes you respect the 38 that can spary its heart out from 600 yards and get good hits with the 500 rpg nose mounted 50s.

I set convergence at 200 on my canons, 300 on .50 cal.

Fire at point blank range, when the other one is at 0 distance.
