BostonIII Improvements.
« on: February 24, 2003, 06:13:17 PM »
Currently in aces high I have been flying boston3 and doing short bomb runs with great results in the arena. Going from base to base dropping all the bombs onto one single FH and fuel, radar, ammo and also town.

But I have had some issue with the ac and other, were you cannot shot behind your six, because your tail is there. I thought hard and long about this issues and tried many tactics to combat this current situation with this bomber. For example staying away from Fighters. This didn’t work out the best because you all know when you see a boston3 its dead basically. I have tried Turning the boston3 into a turn fight with a spitfire or another ac were I could simple shot at the enemy that I am forcing to turn with the ac from the rear gun. But as soon as I jump onto the rear guns after turning the boston3  aces high or the code would simple want to level out the ac or bomber.

I have tried getting a wingman onto my ac for the back gunner. But this has always not worked because of lag, ping and also a very jump shooting platform from his perspective.

I would recommend if it could be done for the next update, is for bomber that have a rear gunner that has to sit behind the vertical stabilizer. When the player selects to use the rear gun, the bomber would NOT go into the basic mode of level flight, instead follow the last input by the user from the joystick. For example, you would have a spitfire behind you. Then you would turn the ac into a basic turning circle, then when you jump onto the rear gunner, instead of leveling it would simple follow the last flight path that you used before jumping placements.

Accurse without user input into the bomber or ac, it could simple crash into the ocean if for example you leave it too long without update the course.

This is a possibility instead of the current level flight default that aces high currently has.

Thank you for your time.

Try using alt X before you go to the gunner position. It's been a while, but, you used to be able to set the plane in a slight climb or dive and then use the rudders to manuever. Used to work fairly well.

Use your rudder while in the rear gun position. It will turn the plane and position the enemy out of the stabilizer "dead" zone.

I have tried all those methods and they dont work very good if you have a twist stick.

No point in using alt X because you just become a more easyer target and you need to get a good burst of those guns to rip anythink apart.

I think there is a problem with the gun / aircraft object cut out on the rear mg on the boston.

try this go to the rear gun and point dead 6. slowly move left or right until you can fire and you find your MG is unable to fire until you are WELL past the tail.

Now do the same in the A20 (essentially the same layout except 2 mgs and try the same test. You will see as soon as your gun goes past the vert stab it fires.

Basically the area covering the vertical stabiliser which cuts out mg fire is overly sized on the boston.
This of course is assuming it wasnt really unable to fire in its present arc of fire.
If that is the case then its time to blame the guys who built the Boston !!! lol :)

Lets not forget the missing gun position on the A-20G, which I am pretty sure also existed on the boston.

That tunnel/ventral gun would be DAMNED usefull, even if it was just a dinky .30. (or .50 for the a20g)

I thought I'd bump up this post to the attention of the powers that be, since we just got 4 beautiful, new skins for the Boston III by Greebo.  <>

However, as much as I like the challenge and reward of a successful Boston mission, it's a little too difficult because of the apparently over-sized tail cut-out preventing the rear gun from firing when it looks like it should be able to.  Also, from what I can find out, the Boston did have a single, trainable .303 in a ventral position.  Not much, but a lot better than nothing.

Any chance of changing this?  I admit, improving one of the least popular bombers probably isn't a priority.

Thanks.
