The 342nd FS was part of the 348th FG that flew with the 5th AF in the Pacific.  IT was best known as the Group lead by Neal Kearby who won the Medal of Honor in a Jug.

Start here

http://www.web-birds.com/5th/348/348th.htm

Then go here:

http://www.schifferbooks.com/newschiffer/book_template.php?isbn=0764302485

And order a copy of Kearby's Thunderbolts.

John Stanaway is a heckuva writer and has done some of the best FG histories out there.  Anything you'd want to know about Grandpa's Squadron and Group would be in it.
