Problem with AA and AF
« on: December 25, 2004, 03:06:18 PM »
Due to recent increases in performance netted by better hardware, I've been playing with quality settings on my video adapter.  I've found I can increase AA to 4x with very liveable frame rates, and even up to 8xs without losing too much more.  I'm comfortable with the 4x though.  The problem I have is when I try to engage AF.  For some reason, when I try to start AH after engaging AF, the screen will flash back and forth between the desktop and the AH log in screen uncontrollably.  I can ctrl+alt+del and wait for the processes menu to pop up, and then kill aceshigh.exe and I'm fine.  It doesnt matter if AA is running or not.  I can have AF set for "application controlled" and it's ok, but as soon as I turn it to "ON" and try a setting, I get the same problem.

Patient, "Doctor .. Doctor, It hurts when i do this...!"
Doctor, " don't do it then".

My apologies for the glib response, but it kinda hits home.  Have yet to see a post anywhere where AF is recommended.

AF is not really going to look good in the game anyway.  It makes text unreadable, and/or look very bad.

There are only a couple of time you would ever notice the benefits of AF anyways.  Not sure why your card/drivers are flaking out, but you would do well to leave AF at application preference.

does AH have one set application preference for AA and for AH, or is it set differently from system to system.  If one set preference, what is it for AA and for AF?

Definitely its going to vary from system to system.  If you read this thread here.............

http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=138732

Skuzzy posted a set of formulas for figuring out where your settings should fall for the video card you have.  Beyond that, if you are within the range where the card should handle the video OK but you have a slow processor for example, you may still have to turn down some settings.

I think all Skuzzy was trying to say above was that AF doesnt work well with AH.  Beyond that, and as long as you operate within the limitations of your hardware, your experience is totally subjective and settings are up to you and your tastes.  Obviously, the more powerful your computer and its hardware, the broader the range of options you have available.  But thats another thread lol.

SOA2,
I think he was asking what the default Application Preference is for AH.  I believe they will both be off if you check "Application Preference" for AA and AF.
