About your approaches, the trick is to get the hang of diving at a point behind him when you start the run.  You want to smoothly level out behind and below him and make a nice sneaky shot from his low 6.  It takes a long time to get the hang of it, but you need to watch your target and try and predict where he is going to go.  After a while, you will be able to predict where he will be, and arrange to get yourself there at the right altitude, trimmed well, and with time to shoot.  It just takes practice.  Also, whenever you see somebody in an E fighter like the Pony or F4U racking up kills... follow them.  Forget about getting your own kills, just watch them and follow them.  You will learn tons this way, and get a few kills along the way as they evade the leader and fall into your lap.

I used to learn the BnZ game from just following Hollywd. In the beginning we flew ponies and he would tell me to stay with him during his dives and zoomes... After a while I got the hang of it and we turned to combat spread flying and loose goose tactics (so sweet to fly in elements).

Saintaw add to all the above 1 notch of flaps on the P51 helps a bucnh in turnning, if you master this you will be called a cheater for sure. Also if the gear doors are implemented right when you dive down on someone (you in the hog now) if they turn you turn with them and drop gear, be ready to shoot quick they will be in your sights, quickly raise gear again. This is a midified break turn. Oh P51 can use flaps in turn also just pump from down one notch to down to ntch then up to one again works pretty good.
