Currently there is no advantage unless the terrain tile is rocky and bounces the GV when not on the road.
A comprehensive road system takes as much work as building the terrain to begin with and most map makers will be nearing burnout before they think about working on the road system.
There is an auto build-roads button in the Terrain Editor that automatically places roads running north of all the critical objects. Each time a new AH version comes out, there is a chance all the terrains need to be rebuilt and the auto road build button is a huge time saver. That’s why you see roads crossing airfield runways and killing people trying to take off, each field needs to be checked manually to correct the errors.
Given that roads are not placed logically as paths between bases and travel from the north to the south would have an advantage under the current MA system, it would unbalance things if GVs were faster traveling the roads.
I’m hoping we can make terrain tiles which will slow travel by about 20% (5 mph for a Panzer) without bouncing the GVs too much when not on a road. That would accomplish the same thing and promote travel on a good road system. Don’t look for it to happen in the MA unless Htc can better automate the process of road building but it’s possible on the user built maps.
The best solution would be to add a “drag” factor to the terrain tiles but we’ll probably be forced to bounce the GVs around to accomplish the 20% speed reduction.
