Damage / Distance display inconsitancy

First picture is from a close ranger range and shows the left rudder damage visably. Wasn't there damage shown (odd tearing, discoloration, ect..) on control surfaces, instead of just the missing part? )

Anyway, when you get further away and the lower res/poly (?)model is visable, the damage is not shown. Least here on the b24.

I have something to follow this:
 
I had spawned with 25% fuel in an F4U4, with only one fuel tank (Main Tank), and was going to bomb the CV when the ack hit me and i heard a crack. Next thing I know, white stuff is smoking off my tail. So I opened the damage screen, and nothing was damaged? What could this have been?

Probably a 'bug' in the models level of detail (LODs).
