Better than beer?
« on: January 17, 2005, 07:48:59 PM »
I just drank 3 servings of Kava Kava.  Its a polynesian root that is sold over the counter.  All I can say is Wow.  I feel like I just drank two beers.

How long till this stuff is regulated?

Man, this stuff might replace my morning coffee!  I have a general sense of well-being, no anxiety at all, just feel happy and complacent.

it is generally accepted that kavalactones work by binding onto various receptors in the brain particulary part of the brain known as the amygdala that regulates feelings of fear and anxiety

In fact one study demonstrated that Kava kava is at least as effective as benzodiazepines

.Medical studies have conclusively shown that Kava kava is Non-addictive, Improves concentration and short term memory, Increases reaction time and has no demonstrable side effects.

So this stuff is a drug.  But I like it.

Hehe!  Kava Kava root can be bought in any natural food store.

It's alright.  How potent was the stuff that you drank?  Was it mixed (tea extract)?  Smoked?

Better than beer... eh, depends on the same as any drug;  amount of food intake, amount of hydration, body weight, experience/exposure, etc.  I took kava in pill form (sliced open for greater potency), felt a relaxed alcohol/marijuana buzz.  It was 'different' but not something I would necessarily compare to alcohol.  If you take it enough, you'll definitely build a tolerance.  To this day I haven't had the same buzz I had from the first time I took it.

Kava has polynesian origins and has been used as a social piece for groups.  A 'pass the pipe' sort of thing.

Cool that you've discovered it :)  At the moment is is not regulated - and it's popularity isn't too high that it will be in the near future.  It's effects are not as detrimental as excessive alcohol intake.

If you have an exract and/or pill available, break open the pill and hold it under your tongue.  Your mouth will eventually become numb, but the effects hit you a little faster.  Relaxation and complacency is good mon :)
