I've had my Tippman 98 for about 3 years and haven't had a single problem with it.
I have been reborn a new man!

Notice I never said a better man.

Paintball is fun, like a water balloon fight with painfull incentive. Airsoft is silly. I like the look of the feed mechanism on the tippman a5. Looks like it would cut down on common problems. I'm not into paintball enough to buy anything though.

I had that for about a year then some guys wanted me on a team (which I ended up captain) so I needed to upgrade gear.

The cocker is stock except for:

WGP Hinge Trigger (Eclipise makes a nicer one, but I was broke at the time)
Bomb 4-way valve
Sticky Grips
Upgraded bolt for better air delivery to the ball
Black Ice regulator

It's a quite low pressure gun, it took me a lot of hours of tinkering to get it to the point where it was reliable, the speed was actually adjustable and the timing was fine.  On a 68 cu in tank at 4500psi I can shoot damn near a case.

Anyways, I'd say Tippman as your first marker.  They are as simple, reliable and idiot proof as they come.  If that doesn't suit your fancy, I'd say a Piranha.  I've used these in some handicap games (NPPA guys vs Amateurs, Amateurs get to use their regular markers) and found them to be very reliable, simple and quieter than a spyder.  A spyder barks like a dog and has a funky sound to it when fired, I don't like it.  They're good markers for some, and some swear by them but I never was one to like them.

The most important part of your new setup will be the barrel.  I had a 16" ceramic on my first as I mentioned (I wish I could remember the manufacturer) and it fit PMI Premium paint perfectly.  My J&J Edge system has several sized bases to get a good paint-to-barrel match.  Another note on tippmans, they are HPA (High Pressure Air, or "Nitro") ready.  So you can buy the marker, use C02 until winter, pick up an HPA tank and use that.  When the time comes to upgrade, you can sell the marker only and you will already have a good HPA.  That's handy for spreading costs out over time.

I haven't been to sleep yet and its 0630 EST so if this doesn't make perfect sense, my apologies.  Spelling errors I apologize for in advance if I have made any.

Still use my .68 Carbine w/ a bolt and Dye BoomStick.  It is STILL the quietest marker with the 15 people or so that I play with.  It is also 8 years old and the copper tube has been replaced.   Other than those mods and that, NO PROBLEMS.

I am considering the Tippmann A-5 as my next marker, as my CURRENT Dye Boom Stick will screw in without an adapter.

I don't know much about the A5, but the Boomstick is a good barrel and I don't have one bad thing to say about the .68 carbine.  Wanna sell it?  I'll trade my autococker for it (and a little $$) :)

I've had the Tippmann Prolite for close to 8 years - never had a single problem with it - only needed to overhaul it twice, if that and it was just to replace the trigger spring and lube'r up.

Upgraded to the A5 this past March. The A5 uses a lot more air then my prolite - and of course you go through more rounds with the automatic option b/c i've got a response trigger.

Bottom line - I love the A5 - its like my own Thompson SMG.

HOWEVER - when it comes to reliability - I CANNOT beat my Prolite. I've been backed in the corner so many times with that - at long ranges with a decent barrel - forget about it. (For non-New York'ers - that means it ****ing rules, owns, you cannot beat it).

Wolf

P.S.

I've got some kickin video at Skirmish USA in a 300 person assault - if someones got some space i'll send it to u and post it up

To people that haven't played I've always described paintball as a form of hightech tag , the pain I say is equal to being swatting with a willow tree branch.

In airsoft you find the folk that wanna play war and pretend they are rambo ect..

two different camps.

I have a boomstick on my cocker.  Best barrel I've had... I recommend it.  Have the same sticky grips.

Different Reg/bolt... my duck only goes to 3000 psi.

Well depends on where you're hit and from how far. Worst hits for me have been on my head. Dazed me momentarily, and left me with a big lump and a scab on my scalp. Feels like getting hit with a marble from a slingshot. Luckily I've never taken one in the nads.

The main malfuction I've seen with paintball markers is feeding multiple balls at once. The rotor feed thingy on the a5 looks like it would prevent that.

Well you're an idiot just asking for it if you play without a cup.

Worse shot I took was way back in the day when we wore those tiny masks that covered your eyes and mouth only. It was 40-50 degrees in the fog around 8 in the morning, freezing. I got hit right in the upper ear. When it's that cold your ears are already throbbing. I just remeber gritting my teeth and concentrating on breathing, not to get upset and lash out at the guy.

Worse shot I saw was one my buddy took. The local field had this maze made of old garge doors and lumber. Each team started on opposite edges of the field. In the center of the field was the maze which had a flag hidden inside. To win you'd take the flag to the enemies flag pole where they started from. Only the guys with balls would go inside this maze of pain. To make a long story short. I saw my buddy come out with his gun over his head walking bent over. As he go closer I saw blood pooling through his camo t-shirt. It looked like he was shot with a real gun. He pulled up his shirt and  he had four nipples, two which were bleeding. He still has the scars. OUCH

Can the A5 be fired semi-auto as well as full auto?  Is there a mode selector?

I may be interested in this.  The local fields here have a semi-auto only rule but I have a real good history with tippmann's.

I don't play enough to justify using an autococker, and every time I play it seems like something goes wrong and I spend more time fixing it than I do playing.  I am not as quick with repairs and timing issues as I used to be and spend too much time re-learning how things work.

Thing with the cockers is.... their design is taken from the guy that makes the Palmer Guns... You buy the cocker then you spend almost the same amount to "trick" it out... with the Blazer I paid once and have a better gun outta the box...go figure.. alll I can do is laugh. But it's all about popularity on the pball fields these days not what you know.

Worse shot I ever took was in the back.  The ball literally pushed in and touched my right kidney.   I tried standing still, but just dropped to my knees, the guy that shot came over helped me back to our rally point (he went back into the game).

Is anyone familiar with the Angel markers? Just curious, I saw them on ebay, but a little expensive.

Back in my paintballer days I played against a team of guys who all shot angels. This was back in the day when the nitro gear was just coming out so alot of amateur teams like mine still shot spyder TLs and guns like that.
Well we went up agaisnt some Angels and I gotta tell you the fire power was amazing. They would pin us down and we couldnt move. Now this was like 10 years ago so im sure that things have changed quite a bit but ive been out of the scene for about that long so I dont know what the guns are like today.
If they are anything like they use to be they are worth the money.
