That's not herself.  That's her seeing the fighter as competition.  E.g., your other girlfriend.

You can find plenty of comments from the likes of Spitfire and P-51 pilots describing their aircraft in terms normally reserved for attractive women.

Right now am reading "The Mighty Eighth", where it talks about B-26 crews referring to their ride as "the beautiful lady".  

Of course, before the bugs were worked out on the low wing loading, it was called "the Baltimore potato" [no visible means of support]. :)
